Differential backup always backing up all files

Thread needs solution

Quick question for the experts here. I have 2010 running on 3 different Windows 7 (Home Premium) computers, all with exactly the same backup scheme: Create a full backup then 5 differentials. All backups are done to a network file server.

On 2 of the 3 systems, I get exactly what I'd expect - a huge file representing all files on the computer, followed by 5 smaller ones, each one slightly larger than the last.

But on the 3rd system, every backup is a full backup. I've triple checked the backup task and it definitely matches the one on the other two systems.

It's driving me nuts. I'm about to dive deeper into what's going on, but I thought I'd run it by everyone here to see if anyone else has had this happen and knows what might be going on before I invest a bunch of debugging time.

Thanks to all.

Ken.

Hello Ken!

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here! I understand your concern, and will do my best to help you.

Differential backup's registering the changes made to the system since the last full backup made. The most possible reason for the differential to be the size of the full backup is the defragmentation. If you start defragmenting the hard drive, the sectors get changed, and the product backs them up.

In Windows 7 defragmentation is enabled and scheduled by default, so you may be not ware that it's running. As a solution I'd advise to reschedule defragmentation: set it to run after the 5th differential, but before the next full backup. Please find more information and a solution in this KB article.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

I have also run into the problem running on Win7/64bit. I'm attempting to to make a backup scheme that will correct this problem. I have set a Differential backup that will create a new full backup after every 2 differential backup around my defrags. Here is the Scheme:

Full backup: Sunday 1am
Diff Backup: Monday 1am
Diff Backup: Tuesday 1am
Defrag: Wednesday 1am
Full Backup: Thursday 1am (new full since I already have 2 differentials)
Diff Backup: Friday 1am
Diff Backup: Saturday 1am

Then is starts over. I'm just now sure if TI2010 will delete the previous full backups automatically. The task is the same so I assume it will. I will know more once this runs Sunday Morning and Monday morning. My destination location is smaller than the source location but compression should bring it down to where I should be fine. I do know that I cannot hold 2 full backups. Nice thing I did determine is that acronis will error out for diskspace if there isn't enough but not delete my previous backup.

Thanks
Michael

Update!

Sunday morning a full backup was created. Monday morning a differential was created like it was suppose to be. We will see what happens on Tuesday morning.

I have not opened/edited or done anything with the task entry. I was thinking that TI2010 thinks it a new task if you edit it, say change the time, it starts all over again with a full backup. Haven't touched it and it seems to be working so far. Lets see what happens on Thursday morning when another full backup is to be made and the previous is to be deleted. I wonder if the previous differential backups, Monday and Tuesday will be deleted due to the new full being made on Thursday. I will report back.

Michael

Morris, Your selection of options controls what is retained and what is deleted.Adjust the option to your own numbers.

Item 1 would be : after 1 full and 2 diff.
Item 2 would be : 1 if you only want to keep 1 chain plus whatever is in process. The first chain would not be deleted until after the 2nd diff on the the current chain.
Item 3 would only be checked if you wanted to additionally keep the original chain plus one other full chain.

It seems that you are showing me an image from TI2011. I have TI2010. we will see what happens over the next few days. Thanks.

I have good news. On Thursday morning I checked and I have a new full backup and all other files (the previous full backup and the 2 differential backups) have been deleted. This is fantastic. I think I will keep this scheme or adjust it and my defrag date a bit. Might change the defrag to Saturday morning, full backup on Sunday morning and Differential for Monday through Friday.
