Disk Cloning vs. Restore & Backup Disk Image vs. Back and restore partition
Hi All and especially GroverH,
First of all thanks to everyone and especially GroverH for sharing vast expertise knowledge.
I am visiting forums and using Acronis after a gap of year or little more and have been reading each forum post from last several years.
Before I raise my queries / doubts I would like to detail how I used Acronis in past and why:
1. Cloning was the function I used most –
Reason: Fastest and simplest way to create a bootable exact copy of my internal laptop hard disk to external USB hard disk with all data backup automatically done.
Advantage: No brainer, least amount of time taken, data backup created whenever I did clone for creating a clone
2. Infact I never even created or have used rescue CD or it seems now called rescue media etc
My doubts / queries now
I have seen after reading Acronis KB website and so so many forum posts for several hours is that its asked to place new (to be used as target) hard drive inside laptop and take internal original hard disk (source) outside. Further create first disk image and then restore it rather than cloning. I understand that cloning has some risks. I never experienced in past but I am no expert and not a professional so rely on the fact that many people have faced it and so I better avoid using cloning. However my pain points are:
1. Why Acronis gives cloning feature if it can risk source (which vitiates purpose of backup?)?
2. Using the long process (to my understanding its very long when compared with clone) of first creating full image backup and then restoring from image (or at least testing simulating that backup image is bootable) weekly is a painful process in terms of two steps and time consumption vis a vis clone. I have seen posts on forum wherein people are reporting huge time in creating backups. Any ideas here?
3. What if I want to only make periodic data backup (as against OS backup) using Acronis TI full data backup vis a vis clone? Is a clone not recommended even for data backup when I don’t want target drive to be bootable?
4. Can I use restore partition only method to selectively back up and if needed restore C (os partition) only. Likewise only D (data partition)?
5. How has been the experience of pluspack for restoring image to different laptop? Is it worth it or does it create many issues?
Appreciate kind guidance and view points / opinions.
Thanks for your tim
