Disk signature - Error on ATIH 2011 Manual?
On the latest manual for ATIH, we find, pages 79/80 - Cloning, option "Recover Disk Signature":
We recommend that you select the Recover disk signature check box due to the following reasons:
Quote Acronis True Image Home 2011 creates scheduled backups using the signature of the source hard disk. If you recover the same disk signature, you don't need to re-create or edit the backups created previously.
Some installed applications use a disk signature for licensing and other purposes.

We recommend that you clear the Recover disk signature check box when:
You use an image backup not for disaster recovery but for cloning your Windows hard drive to another one.
Unquote.
The last sentence contradicts what I found on this forum, written by Acronis Support some time ago. If I use the image recover method (of a full disk) to clone that old disk to a brand new HD, which will replace the old one with Windows, I understand I MUST SELECT "Recover disk signature" in order to avoid some programs requiring new validations/activations. On this last sentence, the manual is saying NOT to select the "Recover the disk signature option". If the intent is to clone, then cloning is to get an identical HD, isn't it?
By the way, when we use the Clone operation (not image recover), that option is not available. Then, another question arises: what happens with the disk signature when we just clone?
Best regards and thanks

Brian,
Regarding post #1.
A review of pages 79/80 of 2011 user manual is a discussion of disk recovery via the recovery of a backup. The cloning procedure is not part of the discussion so the quotation is not factual.
When the TrueImage cloning procedure is used, the result is a disk copy and the entire disk (all partitions) is what is copied or cloned.
In broad terms, none of the cloning procedure by any of software program as really true exact copies in every detail. Minor Adjustments are made by the programs based on the sizes of the disk, etc.
As I understand it, the closest thing to a true copy by TrueImage is when the manual mode is selected; and the manual/move option is set to "as is" method. Using the "as is" option, this means the new clone is made at the same sizes as the old and if the new targe disk is larger, the space difference is left as unallocated for the user to change later.
As the cloning is a disk copy, the disk signature would be part of the copy, although there could be instances where the hardware dictates a new disk signature be applied. The cloning procedure does NOT offer a "recover disk signature" option.
A google search should offer more details about some the changes made to the target disk when a clone is created by the various brands of software.
I am not Acronis so my comments are my own based on what I have read and observed.
