Does anyone else experience crashes and hangs when configuring file-based backups?

After only a few days of using the product, my overall impressions are already somewhat unfavorable, as the product quality does not really inspire confidence that it will ever work when the chips are down (application crashes and hangs; inordinate amount of time for the UI even to appear after launching; much slower-than-expected disk-image backups for software that does not use VSS).

File-based backups seem particularly susceptible to crashes and hangs before they can even be configured to run.

The system is Windows 7 SP1 x64 and the backup location is a physically-connected external drive.

Same problem, same OS. All was okay until I tried to upgrade to 2012 in December but that did not work at all so I re-installed 2011 now cannot backup. I've tried all the tips I could find but after years of using this product I'm about to give it up.
