Email backup and updates

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have two issues for which I wondered if there were any workarounds.

1. When backing up email, it takes a disproportionate amount of time to backup ~450Mb of .pst files. I've never timed it, but it's way longer than it should. Also, it seems to have a good ferret around inside them, as by the time it's finished backing them up, the .pst files have doubled in size, and I have to re-compact them with the Outlook Data File settings.

2. I'm currently using build 6131. It automatically checks for a newer version, and I manually check occasionally too, and in both instances it reports I'm using the latest version. However, I've just checked and build 6154 has been out since December 27th, 2011. Any reasons why?

Thanks very much,

Andy.

Build 6154 not showing in auto update? Just lucky. I recommend staying with 6131 unless you have some compelling need to move to 6154. Build 6154 corrects some specific probs som e users had but has presented BSOD probs others of us.

ATI won't/normally shouldn't have any effect on the size of any Outlook files any more than copyying a file will alter the origianl file being copied. You can try the operation with Outlook turned off; that might speed things up and avoids the pst fielsize increase, which I suspect ar a rsult of something wacky in Lookout (I mean Outlook) and how it responds to having ati force the psts closed repeatedly while it copies the data in them.

Also , instead of an email backup, you can try just doing a filemode backup that includes the directory with the pst files and other mail data files.

Cheers Scott,

Thanks for the tip regarding 6154. I'll wait until a more reliable build is released before I update.

Aye, it's weird, but it's just happened again. Outlook is definitely closed. (I checked in the list of running services.) The two .pst files were 450Mb before it started backing them up. 50 minutes later (!) they both weighed in at 695Mb. So I have to squash them back down to the sizes they originally were.

Good suggestion: I don't think I'll use the email backup 'feature' in the program. Instead I'll just copy the whole Outlook folder: that should be quicker and it should leave the file sizes alone.

Much appreciated. :)

Andy.

For the recrod, Just be sure to check that you have the right location. the PRogram is under PRogram files but the pst files elsewhere. though it sounds like you have that part figured out.

Cannot get this software to back up Windows Live Email. It starts but never finishes. I assume this feature does not work, correct?
