Email messages from Windows Mail on Vista won't restore from TIB file

Thread needs solution

I am running Acronis 10 for Home and have had it for years diligently backing up. I recently had to restore a Vista machine and needed to recover email messages from a backup drive using Acronis 10. These email messages and settings were archived seperately from the Vista machine data file backups. This is the first time I used Acronis to do a recovery. To my surprise the recovering process completed succesfully, as directed by Acronis, but my email inbox, contacts, and saved message folders are all empty. Where did Acronis recover the messages and folders to? Can they be extracted from the TIB file some other way? I am quite upset that the first time I use the software for recovery it does not work. Luckily I had backed up all non email files and folders using drag and drop to my backup drive and was at least able to recover non email data files from there. I am now not sure I can trust the Acronis software to do a recovery. Any ideas on how to recover my email mesasges?

Hello Mike,

Please accept our apologies for the difficulties you've experienced.

Let me assist you.

First of all, please be aware that E-mail backup feature of Acronis True Image 10 Home doesn't support Windows Mail. Only Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003 and Microsoft Outlook Express are supported. However, if you've used Data backup and have backed up the correct folders that should be:

  • C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\WindowsMail.MSMessageStore
  • C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Backup\new\WindowsMail.MSMessageStore

and restored them to the same location, I may suggest you to have a look at this article to find the information on how to restore your mail.

Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Hi Ilya,
Thanks for your response. So when I selected email for Acronis 10 to backup and it said backup was successful, what did it backup? anything? The file that it created is a 2Kb TIB file. Can Aconis restore the TIB file back to a native format?

Hello Mike,

Unfortunately, I can't tell you for sure what Acronis True Image 10 had backed up, we haven't tested this behavior recently since it's a very old version of the software, but you can try to restore that archive to a different place to check it for yourself.

Thank you.

I checked and ATI2011 only backs up Windows Mail folders. Does your message to mike mean that I restore my Windows Mail folders from my ATI backup then I use Windows Mail to EXPORT then IMPORT to get my Windows Mail folders back in shape?? If not, then should I be running a DOS batch file with each ATI backup to run Windows Mail Export so that I am not caught with useless Windows Mail backup ?
