Endlessly unable to clone disk in either Windows 7 or XP!

Thread needs solution

On my computer I have tried both ATIH and Migrate Easy on new computer - have used successfully other versions on another computer. For reasons I can NOT understand, I get to the point where it tells me a boot is needed and then says I likely don't have enough permissions [I'm the Administrator!] or that it can't update the registry and then I must cancel. It then says 'operation completed successfully'..but nothing happened. I've tried on two different OS disks - one with XP and one with Win 7. Same problem on both. Help!?!

Secondary problem. I have both SATA II and SATA III disks and noticed Acronis would not allow cloning partition from II to III - why?...and is it possible...I can't see why not. All are in same format and of compatible sizes.

Hello Magic Crazybear,

Thank you for posting and welcome to our forum. I will definitely assist you.

The first issue occurs most likely because there is or was another Acronis program installed on your machine. We have had reports about the incompatibility of Acronis Migrate Easy 7 with various Acronis programs. Please try not to have 2 programs at the same time on your computer. In any case, Acronis True Image 2011 Home can clone just as well as the other, there is no point for both of them.

Acronis Migrate Easy 7 does not support Windows 7, that is why I can assume that you only have Acronis True Image 2011 Home but still get the same permissions error. To get around it, please try disabling UAC.

The cloning procedure does not allow to clone partitions, only hard drives. If you are trying to clone hard drives, please send me screenshots of all your steps in the cloning wizard.

The most reliable way to clone a disk would be by using the bootable CD. Please check this detailed guide for additional information.

I can also recommend the following forum posts that provide a lot of information about cloning vs disk imaging:

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

In Windows 7 I removed the Migrate Easy; then had to re-install the ATIH. Still had problems. However, using it on a USB flash drive I was able to clone from one SATA II drive to another. That leaves the problem of why I can not even see [they are made faint and not allowed to be chosen] moving a drive from SATA II to SATA III or even from one SATA III drive [AHCI on now, but I tried with it off, as well] to another SATA III drive. Any ideas as to why. I'm using a GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard. These are 'standard' WD SATA III 1TB drives on a Marvell controller. Thanks.

N.B. At different times in this long process [weeks] Acronis saw the SATA III drives as RAID [they are NOT!]; SCSI [I don't consider them so, but maybe they are....?!?!?!]; and just listed as SATA, when the SATA II drives were listed as IDE. To me, confusing and not correct.]

Update: I was able finally to clone a SATA III disk to another SATA III disk, but still can NOT [and need to!] clone a SATA II disk to a SATA III disk.....can anyone give me a clue what the problem is. Acronis won't allow it and won't tell me why.

Hello Magic Crazybear,

Thank you for replying.

We will need to investigate this problem because we do not have known issues similar to the one you are facing. Please collect this report together with the screenshots from each step from the cloning wizard and contact our Support team so that we can get this resolved.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
