Excluding file and folder names: case-insensitive

Thread needs solution

If I want to exclude every folder (along with all its subfolders) and also every file that contain

^acronis^

regardless of the position in the name and regardless of the capitalization, will this do the trick?

*^acronis^*

Also, does using the carat character pose any problems?

Eliezer, there is no mention of using the ^ character as a wildcard in the exclusions settings.

See the ATIH 2014 User Guide: Excluding items from backup which has the following description of using exclusions and wildcards.

What you can exclude and how

1. You can exclude hidden and system files from a backup by selecting the corresponding check boxes.

We do not recommend excluding hidden and system files from the backups of your system partition.

2. You can exclude files meeting the criteria you specify. To do this, select the Files matching the following criteria check box, enter the exclusion criterion, and then click Add.

By default, the program excludes from backups files with the following extensions: .~, .tmp, and .tib.

How to add an exclusion criterion:

  • You can enter explicit file names for exclusion from the backup:
    • file.ext - all such files will be excluded from the backup.
    • C:\file.ext - the file.ext file on the C: disk will be excluded.
  • You can use wildcard characters (* and ?):

    • *.ext - all files with a .ext extension will be excluded.
    • ??name.ext - all files with a .ext extension, having six letters in their names (starting with any two symbols (??) and ending with name), will be excluded.
  • To exclude a folder, click Browse, select the folder you want to exclude on the directory tree, click OK, and then click Add.

To delete a criterion, for example, added by mistake, click the Delete icon to the right of the criterion.

Right, I was not trying to use the carat as a wildcard at all - and I did read the user guide before posting. :-)

My question was if I want to exclude all files and folders with names containing exactly this string, meaning the carats would actually appear in the file/folder names:

^acronis^

regardless of the position in the name and regardless of the capitalization, will this do the trick?

*^acronis^*

Also, are exclusions always case-insensitive?

Eliezer, if this is a Files & Folders backup then the only options are to exclude files - you cannot create an exclusion for folders - you have to do this by not selecting the folders to be excluded in the main Source selection panel.

As far as I am aware exclusions are case insensitive.

You would have to try your *^acronis^* exclusion to see if it will work for you, otherwise you could use the ? wildcard character to replace the carat but this would obviously match any other character that might be present.

This is a Disk Backup, but (based on the screenshot in the user guide) it sounds like there's no way to exclude folders either:

  • To exclude a folder, click Browse, select the folder you want to exclude on the directory tree, click OK, and then click Add.

I wish there was flexibility built-in for allowing me to rename a folder in order to exclude it without having to go into Acronis... :-(

Eliezer, you could use the Pre/Post Commands option for your backup task to rename a folder in order to exclude it assuming that you have the folder of that name not selected to be included.

See Pre/Post commands for backup in the User Guide.
