f11

Thread needs solution

This is a new computer and it came with makers backup installed on USB disc. To activate I have to press f11 at start-up. When I install your Acronis 2014 product I also have to press f11 to access secure zone, thus causing a conflict that results in a crash. Any advice?

Hi Walter,
Just so you know there are people reading :) I would imagine, though have non direct experience of such a thing, that IF the manufacturers USB drive is not currently attached that the F11 key would default to Acronis and, when attached, it would then work with the USB drive? But you may already have tried this??
Perhaps you hit F11 at different times in the startup process for each? This would seem to eb a problem if not since both of these systems will be hard coded to the F11 key press!

Not a lot of help I know but, hey, it's nice to get replys :)

James

Thanks James very good advice, but every time I start up with both, the whole system locks and I lose everything and have to start again from scratch. So perhaps it is best for me to not create a secure zone with Acronis. Its a pity, but perhaps when I am more experienced with Windows 8 I will be able to find a solution. Between you and me I wish I had stayed with Windows 7. Once again thanks.

Morning Walter,
Unfortunately for (us) Microsoft designs things so that, eventually, we are forced to move OS. As to which direction you move well, that's a matter for the individual although it's all pretty steep in the learning curve. I personally upgraded to 8.1 because I've learned the inevitability of it all and I can't afford to jump on the Apple Gravy train. I also dual boot Kubuntu on all my machines so I have an alternative when Windows does it's thing (crashes)
As to your own current issue. Well, you would hope that either the USB manufacturer or Acronis support (Or both) could come up with a solution.
Again, personally, I've never had a great deal of success with the Secure Zone system probably because I always have a dual boot system in place and anything trying to get in before the OS tends to stuff things up so, from that point of view my advice would be stick with the PC manufacturers rescue disc since it sounds pretty well thought out and useful for those dire emergencies where only factory reset will work! (The do happen!)
Acronis works best for me doing regular scheduled incremental backups to a second HDD or external disc and restoring when necessary using the USB or CD rescue boot disc!

We are all different though and that's what makes it all such fun :)

Good luck and I hope that you get on with Win 8.1. So far for me it's been quite well behaved and is, in the end, simply Windows with a different set of clothes on and a bit of a personality shift ;)

All the best,

James P.

Ooops, forgot to mention my one and only possibly useful thought :)

Do you have the USB stick set to boot before the Hard drive in BIOS? If yes then this is not useful info if you haven't a clue what I'm talking about then we *might* be on to something?

Let me know.

J
