Failed to back up file or folder 'blah'

Thread needs solution

I'm getting this message for each of five folders in the backup I've elected to back up. All these files backed up successfully in ATIH 2011. No explanation is forthcoming as to why these folders can't be backed up. If there are hard disk errors, it should say so. If not, it should provide the cause so that we can investigate further. As it stands, I'm left scratching my head as to what's going on, as those folders are in regular use.

Not amused.

Where are these folders situated, what does the log show and is the thread title the exact error message you get?

What type of folders are these?

You can always rule out hard disk error by running chkdsk /r on the drive. If this is the drive containing the OS chkdsk will run on next reboot.

The message said "Failed to back up file or folder [folder name]"

The folders are on an internal disk. The files are various types (mainly source code for websites). The logs show nothing other than to say the backup failed. I ran a full chkdsk. It completed without finding any problems.

When I set that job up, I made it an incremental backup. I didn't delete it when it failed, so it ran again automatically overnight. To my surprise, it succeeded. It ran again last night, too, and again no problems.

So it seems that running it the first time fails, but the incremental backup is happy to produce a full delta version from a non-existent original. Amazing.

Is it possible the first time you attempted to image that another program was denying access to those files? A webserver perhaps or some backend process?

TIH will produce a full image if it doesn't exist when an incremental method is chosen, in fact, that is what happens if you want to make an archive containing either incrementals or differentials, the first 'run' will produce a full (assuming no full exists) and will then produce inc/diffs.

Hopefully your problem is now solved.

The folders were definitely not in use at the time. I ran the job at different times and they all failed. I think I'll copy them to another physical disk, create a similar job, and see what happens.

I copied them to another disk, create a similar job, and it succeeded. So I'm in the dark as to what caused the original problem. I shall have to be thankful that all the backups are now working.

I am also having a similar a problem whenever i select particular files to backup. But I noticed the problem is with Acronis true image echo server for windows build 8398. However on machines with old build 8203 it works fine. Please help.

Hashus,
Is your problem with 2012 or Echo Server? If the latter, you'd be better off posting in the business forum.

If it is with 2012, have you tried making a specific category pointing to the folder\files that you want to backup?

I have this similar error.
Most of the issues above I've looked at and don't seem to apply.
The only one is the number of users. I just have Admin and User.
My Backup drive is a USB off my computer.
The source is a NAS Raid box on the network. and we seem to be talking with this OK.

jpg of error message attached.

Any ideas please?

Andrew

From your screen shot it would appear that it is the rubbish bin that is being skipped, I wonder if somehow due to it being a Windows protected folder TIH is refusing or being refused access to it.
