Failed to Open Data Stream

Thread needs solution

Endless problems with this software. Latest backup failure says (very helpfully) "Failed to Open Data Stream". A search of the knowledge base for this error comes up with nothing. There is tons of free space on the backup disk. Also, the backup scheme (differential) specifies to keep no more than 13 versions on the backup. Yet they continue to pile up (>16). I am running Windows 7/64 bit. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Thanks.

David,

I have seen the same error on my Win 7 x64 Ultimate system + ATI 2011. I fixed it by uninstalling ATI, use the cleanup utility (see stickies) and reinstalled.

Thanks very much for the suggestions - I will try it. But as a newbie on this forum, you reference the cleanup utility on "stickies". Not sure what that means - please explain.

Thanks again.

The stickies are the threads you see in darker blue at the beginning of the forum.

My main PC with LSI hardware RAID had a disk fail. Sparing you the details, I ended up restoring the whole-disk partition to a newly-configured drive (hint: "logically" not the same as before hardware failure) from Acronis. The restoration was fine, but subsequent backups using the same Acronis TI backup task generated the "Failed to open data stream" at the end of the task. This problem was resolved by creating a new backup task. (In my case, I happened to change my naming convention so that the new task is independent of the old task .tib files.) Including "validation" as part of the task does not seem to impact the problem, as demonstrated by a separate newly-created task.

So for me, the resolution of just deleting the old task that generated the failure and creating a new version of it resolves this issue.
