Failed to prepare datastream. Check whether the source and target partitions exist.
I'm getting the above error when I try to run a backup. The last backup was last run in September. It completed successfully, without any problems. There have been no attempts to run the backup since then.
Both the source and target partitions exist. Both are accessible. The error code is 0x000B03E9 which gets no hits in the knowledge base. If I run a verify, the verify job fails and tells me the backup is corrupt. The error code is 0x013C0005. There are no hits in the knowledge base.
I can open the existing backups without problem. I can extract files from them without problems.
If anyone has any idea why the Acronis would be reporting these errors against a perfectly valid and accessible backup set, I would be very grateful if you could give me a pointer.

Hello Anton. The backup location is an external usb drive. I tried to send you the systeminfo file but the forum software returned this error message on upload.

Hello Anton,
there is only one hit if I search the Internet for "acronis 0x000b03e9 0x013c0005" - this page here.
I get both error codes in the logfile after backup failed.
I'm using TrueImage Home 2011 Update 1 (Build 6597) on a Win 7 x64 machine.
Backup source is C:\ (the system drive), backup target G:\ an internal HD with a total capacity of 1,5 TB and 680 GB free space. Backups are ~ 220 GB each.
I would be very glad if you could give me some hints, which setting I could check.

Hello SensoBit,
Thank you for taking the time to report about this issue. I will do my best to assist you.
At the moment backups can fail to different backup locations with an error similar to this one: Failed to prepare data stream.
Currently our Testing Lab is in the process of investigating a problem similar to yours, where an incremental backup to a network share fails with this error.
If you like, I can forward the diagnostic information from your machine which will help us to speed up the resolution of this issue.
Let me know if you have additional questions please.
Thank you.

Hello
I also have the same problem after upgrading to ATIH 2011 trying to back up to 2 differnt dvd drives on internal one usb. Both get the same result. A backup to a network drive seems to be the only thing that will work. I need to make a bootable DR set to take with me when I travel and I travel extensively. Please find attached a generated report.
Thanks,
Paul

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your post. I will do my best to assist you.
I am sorry for the inconvenience but in addition to the system report we will need a CDrecord log and a procmon log so that we can understand why this issue occurs. These logs may be rather large that is why I will send you a private message with an ftp link that I will generate for you.
If you need additional assistance, please let me know.
Thank you.

Hello SensoBit,
Thank you for the follow-up.
Let me clarify the situation with the error message "Failed to prepare data stream. Check whether the source and target partitions exist."
Currently we cannot say if it is caused by an issue in the software or it is specific to the hardware/software configuration of a machine. Such errors can occur when the backup is saved to an internal/external hard drive, DVD/CD or NAS/FTP.
In your situation, with backups saved to a NAS, we will need diagnostic information in order to understand why the issue occurs. I am sorry that collecting those logs is an inconvenience for you.
I will certainly provide more information about this issue as soon as I have it.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you.

I have already disabled this feature after several time installation of acronis 2010 (with other errors).

As far as I can see, there's no way to enable or disable consolidation within my settings. My backup concerns two partitions, and the scheme is "version chain". This scheme led to a full and valid backup today. Are just the differential ones problematic? We'll see how the next backup ends...

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem with error code 0X000B03E9+0x004000F. My backups are done on a NAS. Some of the differential backups are doing well and sooner or later the mentioned error code appears and no more backups are done. One I have this error I can't get rid of it and I have to setup a new backup task. Really annoying.
Best regards,
Tom

Hello,
I am still having the problem backing up to usb DVD. However I recently tried a usb hard drive, and it worked OK. However this is not what I choose to use for backups. How much longer is this going to take. I have also downloaded and installed the latest update and have the same results to DVDs. And yes there is no consolidation chosen. I use Custom Backup based on full Backup, and select the DVD as the destination. I don't thinkthere can be any consolidation with this method. I would think you would already know this from all the data I sent you.
Waiting for resolution,
Paul

Same issue.. I am backing up to an FTP Server. I get to 9%, then get the error.
I am running ATI Home 2010 v7160 (did the update thinking it would fix the issue, but it didn't.)

Try to use archive splitting so that each archive uploaded to the FTP is about 1GB maximum.

It gets to about 9% (setting up the backup), and then fails. Plus the files I'm backing up total about 640mb.

This started happening with me as well and I nailed down the cause, after yet another umpteen hours of trying to figure out issues with this software. /grumble
I'm using ATI Home 2011 PP Update 2 build 6868. My backup location is a Samba share on a Ubuntu Linux v11.04 box. I was recently forced to change a setting for the Samba server, in the configuration file I added:
max protocol = LANMAN2
The reason I had to change this is that apparently (from posts located via Google searches) Microsoft introduced a problem via a recent security update which made it so none of my WinXP computers could connect to shares on the Linux box. Enforcing this low protocol security measure is something I came up with as a workaround until the problem (hopefully) is addressed. I'm not overly concerned with the security of shares on this box anyway.
Making this change didn't interrupt connections from my Win7-64 box either, but it sure caused ATI, which runs on my Win7-64 box, to kick its legs into the air in protest. Oddly, ATI would allow me to browse to the share without any problem but it would not read backups from or write backups to the share any longer.
Why would ATI have a problem with this Samba server configuration change when the Win7-64 OS ATI is running on doesn't? And why would ATI allow the user to browse to a location but not read/write the backup TIB files to/from the share? Why would ATI be programmed to care about what security measures I choose to use on my own file server?
I can disable this setting on the Samba server, allowing ATI to work ok but preventing my WinXP computers from connecting to the server. I can then re-enable the setting allowing the XP computers to connect, but disallowing ATI to utilize the TIB files on the share. I have reproduced this issue/workaround several times. And all the while, the share and files on the share are completely accessible through the file browser on the Win7-64 machine.
I suppose this may be a permissions issue I haven't nailed down yet, but it seems odd to me that would be possible with this single change to the Samba configuration file.
I have attached three screen shots. One is of a portion of the error log - I get a different error depending on what I'm trying to do in ATI. Another shows how I can browse to the location on the share with the TIB files, how how the file explorer can do the same while tyring to start a backup or explore backups from within the ATI GUI doesn't work. The third screen shot indicates an odd "Try & Decide" error window which sometimes pops up when I try to perform certain operations. Also take note that a somewhat similar error window indicating "This is not the last volume of the backup archive" sometimes pops up as well.

Figured out what was causing my issue, outlined in my last post in this thread.
MS released KB2536276, an update to (at least) WinXP which disallowed Samba share access without an encrypted password. I removed the "max protocol" setting on my Samba server described above and instead changed the option "encrypt passwords = false" thusly:
encrypt passwords = true
This change allowed me full access to my Samba server, as before, from WinXP, Win7-64 and ATI. I post this information in case it could be related to others' problems here.

I uninstalled the KB2536276 from both systems (Win XP & Win 7 x.64), Rebooted. But I still get the error..
(Just running ATI (Win XP) to an FTP Server (Win 7 x.64 - Filezilla Server).

William,
I think your problem is different.
Can you try the backup from the Acronis recovery CD? I am wondering if the Linux version has the same problem.
You might want to do a local backup, install the trial of ATI to see if it fixes your FTP issues. It looks like ATI 2011 still has some FTP limitations because it uses ASCII instead of binary encoding for the stream that limits the upload to 2GB. But it might fix your unknown FTP issue.
If you have a local backup, it will be easy to go back to ATI 2010.
- Accedi per poter commentare
I am using ATI 2010. The issue started after the windows updates that were installed on June 15th.
I can't try backing up using the Acronis Recovery CD, because the system that is getting backed up is in another state,
and there is no one there that can help.. I connect to it via PCanywhere.
I would try to do a system restore prior to the update, but I can't afford to loose any data right now.
I did try to do a backup from my local Win Vista system to the FTP server, with no issues..
So I know it's a Win XP issue for me..
- Accedi per poter commentare
As a workaround, could you do the file backup locally and upload manually to the ftp server? Maybe the pcanywhere connection competes with the ftp connection?
- Accedi per poter commentare
I will have to try your suggestion (I'll get back on that).
The backup process is scheduled, and has been working prior to the Windows update.
Even doing the unscheduled backup using PcAnywhere has always worked prior to the Windows Update.
The funny thing is if I go into the scheduled backup and edit the FTP connection, it will say it connects
successfully.
- Accedi per poter commentare
Ok.. I did a local backup and got the same error..
So I uninstalled ATI, then reinstalled it.. Local Backup worked, with no error
Then I tried an small FTP Backup.. No issues either.
So I setup the scheduled back that kicks off tonight.. I'll know tomorrow morning what happened.
But based on everything else working now, I don't expect an issue.
All this cause of windows update... Amazing..
Thanks for your help...

Just lost my post - the connection to the forum board time out after I clicked the preview button. Ugh. These forums have been driving me crazy lately between not being able to log me on for two days, being slow, and now this... It's taken me several tries to get this reply posted because the connection keeps timing out. :(
Yeah, gotta' say it feels great to have finally figured that one out after way too many hours! I still find it odd, though, that the ATI *WINDOWS* GUI was having problems accessing shares that the Windows OS it was installed on had no problems with. Perhaps ATI somehow uses it's own networking "code" instead of simply using the OS to access network locations? If that's the case, no wonder there have been constant problems for so long with ATI accessing network locations. ??
Whadya' think?

Well I am glad to see that others are getting thier issues resolved. Unfortunately for me my problem existed before June of this year when the mentioned KB came out.
