Failure to Restore a Backup

After a hard disk crash, I installed Acronis True Image 2015 and tried to restore back to the most recent backup file. However, a corrupted file message was associated with all of the backups. I still had my Acronis True Image 2014 disk so I installed it and it successfully restored the most recent backup. What would cause this problem and how do I resolve should I need to restore a backup in the future?
