File backup stops in the middle

When executing file backups the display under "Backup and recovery" shows that the operation is hung: the green bar does not change nor the estimated time to complete. The USB connected HD where the backup is written shows no activity. I cannot cancel the backup nor perform a shut down of the PC, bacause the backup appears to be still running. When I cut the power to the PC and boot up again the Acronis panel tells me the back up is finished and validated. I can see it on the HD. I can also write other files to the same HD, therfeore, the HD seems OK.
Hwo can I make the display to show the correct backup status?
