fixing Windows 7 after cloning to a Advanced Format Drive
My work laptop (Thinkpad x61 Core2Duo) is running Win 7 Pro x64. I recently imaged my drive from a 500Gb 'standard' format disk to a new 750Gb Advanced Format Drive (WDC Black) using the Recovery Rescue CD.
It worked perfectly -- as far as I could tell -- until today I noticed that my indexing service was not running, and would not start. Same thing for the windows installer service.
I thought I needed a Hotfix from Microsoft (KB982018) but that wasn't any help (I believe that fix is rolled into W7 SP1, which I am running already).
It turns out that I needed to update my Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver. Once that was done after a reboot my Search services and Windows Installer service were running normally again.
I found this in a Technet forum thread,

If this is happening to you, look for lots of event ID 7024 and 7034 from Service Control Manager piling up in the System event logs.
I hope this helps people who do disk upgrades soon, there's not much out there on this issue.
