Frustrating problem

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I been a long time user and now recently i got a Intel NUC D54250 for my media server. It has a small SSD disk so i connected a 1TB external disk through USB and was hoping to use that as the backup storage. Backing up is fine but when trying to restore Acronis fails to find the drive.

I can see the drive being available in Bios and have also selected USB devices are used prior to others as well as enabling legacy usb. So why cant Acronis detect my external Drive?

Also a minor issue that is frustrating as well, for some reason Acronis have made up its mind and uses E:/My Backups as default while i want to change that to D:/My Backups. How can i change this default path? In my view the application should always use the last path used by default. Hopefully this is not some bug? i think this problem has been there for years but now i'm just to tired of it so hopefully you guys have fixed it?

ps. i'm usng the latest Acronis True image 2014 home v6614

Cheers

You cannot change the default path when you create a new task,

It looks like a problem with the USB controllers. YOu might have to upgrade to the premium version to create a WINPE based recovery CD. That version users Windows drivers, that typically support hardware much better than Linux drivers.

To set your own custom path (non-default) or choice of backup location when creating a new task, this can be done via link 2 below, illustrations 6, 7 and 8.
When viewing illustation 8, you can choose the drive letter, folder and backup name for the backup file. This can only be done when creating a new task--not while editing an existing task.

When performing a restore of your system partition, this is best done when booted from the TI Recovery CD.
After booting, the first steop would be to browse to the exact location of the storage disk and the drive letters may need to be different than what is shown. Once you find the specific file to be restored, then a restore should be possible.

If using a USB hub, try a direct connect.

Note:
When performing a backup, my preference is the disk option backup as illustrated in the first few pictures of link 2 below.
You may find all of link 2 to be of interest as well.

Thank you for the reply guys but this confuses me even more.

Ok so now i'm going to be creating a bootable USB stick with Acronis Trueimage in the hope it can work better with my external drive but When i start the wizzard my USB stick is not listed. I been formatting it to fat32, fat, ntfs and even followed the guide here:
http://kb.acronis.com/content/1526

Still all i can see is create an .iso file. So why isnt my USB stick showing?
Even this page shows that it should be possible for me to create a USB stick
http://www.whatsabyte.com/P1/ATI_2010_USB_Boot.html

EDIT: I tried with my another USB stick and this one shows up using the wizzard, no idea why the other do not show in the list. The one not showing up is a new kingston 4GB stick, any clue?

@GroverH, Now to the default path, Sorry but i cant find any image you refer to on link 2, think i been to all of your links but havent been able to find anything, maybe this path is in the register ? (have to check when i get home). But please confirm what link you mean cause link 2 (Grover's How to Create....) dont have the images you refer to.

To get to my referenced links, click on link 2 below.
Inside link 2, click on the green colored text/link.
That will get you to illustration 6, 7, 8

Thanks GroverH but your image is not the same as in TI 2014.

By the way the USB stick i created still wont work, now after booting from it after the splash screen i get this:
----------
Acronis Loader: unable to run Boot menu
Press to continue
---------
And here my wireless key/mouse wont work so i have to kill the pc and restart :/ why cant things be simple, Ghost was easy fast and reliable , good old days.....
Any how any tips?

Reza,

Has the v6614 recovery media ever booted successfully on this PC in the past?

Hi,

Yes i have made a recovery from windows if thats what your asking?
But i have the backup on local SSD disc.

EDIT: Same exact problem as here:
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/42134

hmm really really strange, i cant explain it but i rebooted and now it loads fine and can detect my external HD but it shows it as unknown so i can not use it for backup. Is there any limitation for NTFS disks?

Really sorry for the back and forth, i badly need to backup on external disk since my internal is a 120GB SSD :/

Do i need the premium for WinPE version maybe? is this also USB bootable? Seems overkill for something like this :(

How does this disk show up in Windows Disk Manager?

If you boot from the recovery CD or USB stick does the same thing occur?

Rebooting into Linux when in windows can be problematical.

Hi again,

Not sure what i'm suppose to see, it looks fine and working in windows disk manager.
Using the USB stick it shows as unknown (my external drive), the size and drive letter are ok but it cant be used.

Any how i give up, after 2 days struggle with this and paying for 2 license i found macrium which is just so much better. Sorry but thats just fact. It even let me create a simple USB stick with WinPE which seems to find all my drives just fine. Lots of annoying things like default save path and things like that work so much better in macrium as well. I just dont understand why Acronis is pushing away their customers, for the past 3 years i been buying their updates but sadly to me its been zero value and zero improvement. More like worse user experience. For instance a simple thing like changing folders it scan for backup (several folders) or being able to make a proper usb stick with WinPe is not there. After so many years why is this so?

Sorry for the complaint but as a paying customer i'm really sick of how Acronis is treating the users and all this yearly update that dont actually give me much in return (no i dont care much for cloud thing).

Any how thanks a bunch for your support Colin , i know you are doing what you can but sadly i dont want to spend weeks on something that should have worked without so much problem, even the free version of macrium works flawless.I actually now bought the 4pack of macrium and will be moving away from TI. Hopefully i wont crawl back here later on, so far it seems to be a great tool with nice features. Even supports UEFI ....
