Full Backup

Thread needs solution

I have used single version full backup method on Acronis True Image Home 2011, (build 6597) to an external USB drive (1 TB). The help files state that Acronis would delete the old version and create a new version - at least that is what I understand.
However, this was not the case with my backup. It created a new backup version, or at least it tried. As each backup was almost 600 MB, there was insufficient space for the new one. I came back to the PC after 3 hours, only to find out that the operation had failed. I then had to manually delete the old backup, to make room for the new one.
How can this be corrected - perhaps someone has a clue

Erich,

By default, ATI will first create a new backup, and then delete the older one. This is the safest way of ensuring there is always an existing backup, but this requires more space on your disk.

If this doesn't work for you, you can try to use autoconsolidation. In the scheme, choose incremental, always create incremental versions after the first backup, activate auto-consolidation, and choose the number of incremental versions you want to keep in addition to your full backup. Make sure you validate your backup after every backup. Personally, I don't like auto-consolidation.

Another way of doing this is to create a batch file that deletes your backup file before the next full backup starts, and to add this batch file in your pre-command.

Hi Pat,
thank you for the answer. This makes a lot of sense. However, this didn't happen on my second PC, where the files are only 300 GB. The older backup was not deleted.

The batch file in the pre-command is a good idea
