Hard Disk Cloning - PC Shuts Down Half Way Through
Acronis True Image 2009 Home:
I have tried cloning my existing 250 GB SATA hard disk to a larger 650 GB hard disk, without success.
The operation starts off ok, but halfway through ( approx 60% complete ) the host computer shuts down. This happens during the period when the black & white DOS style progress window is showing on the screen. Upon checking the destination hard drive, I find no information has been transferred. The whole area of the new drive shows up as 'unallocated'
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem ?
Details of my system:
- Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 ( 64 bit )
- Ptrocessor: Intel Q6600 quad core processor.
- RAM: 4GB
Any help or guidance would be appreciated
Best regards,
KSG

Stargate,
As my first recommendation, do as Pat L has suggested. The guides are listed in item #3. If you feel cloning is your only choice, then
1. Be aware of the risks associated with cloning. Check out my "Read before cloning" warning inside my signature link below. What happens if your lose our master disk. This is why you need to have a backup completed before the clone.
2. Disk errors could be an interference. At a command prompt, run Chkdsk C: /R
a shutdown first will be needed for the check can be performed.
3. After checking the disk for errors. Then shutdown.
4. Remove the 250 and place it in an another location such as a external enclosure or docking stations.
5. Place the blank 650 in same boot position as the original 250.
6. Reboot using the TI Rescue CD and perform the clone. Manual/manual is the preferred mode so you can control your partitions sizes.
7. Perform the clone and shutdown.
8. Disconnect the 250 and boot into Windows with only the 650 attached as it its already in its intended boot position.

Hi Grover,
Thanks for the detailed post.
All I am trying to do is to replicate the entire contents of my existing 250 GB C:\ drive on to a larger 650GB blank drive. Once the information has been replicated on to the larger drive, it will then become my new C:\ drive.
What you have described in steps 1 - 8 of your post would seem to be the easiest way to acheive it.
Is there a simpler way of replicating the entire contents of my existing 250 drive on to the external 650 drive, or is the cloning operation you have described the only way of doing it safely ?
Best regards,
KSG

Hi Pat L,
Thanks for the post.
I will read through all the guides as you suggest, and then give it a try.
I have plenty of time, so there is no need to rush things.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Best regards,
KSG
