Hard Drive size question

Thread needs solution

I'm about to buy Acronis and would appreciate an answer before I proceed

C: drive is currently larger than my empty G: drive.

Can I clone the active C: drive system to a smaller drive? ie: my G: drive

Your post is somewhat brief, so a little guesswork is required.

To answer your question literally, the answer is no, a clone is an exact replica of a drive, so it won't fit in a smaller space.

If by 'clone' you simply mean 'restore', then that is possible depending on how much space is actually used in the C: drive. You can image the C: partition using Acronis to some other storage area, then restore that partition to the G: drive as long as the actual used space is smaller than the available space in G:.

Is G: on another physical disk, I assume it is because otherwise you'd have two copies of your OS on one disk, which causes problems.

If G: is already visible to your OS, and you restore your OS to that partition and try to boot from there, you'll likely encounter boot problems because that partition is already logged in your registry as G:, not C:. The lack of information regarding exactly what you want to accomplish makes it hard to determine if you need to be warned about other pitfalls such as these, or not.

However, you can backup your drive and restore it to a smaller drive provided that the amount of space used on source drive is smaller than the available space on the target drive.

You would do a full hdisk backup, then restore the system partition, which allows you to specify the size of the restored partiton. You can resotre the MBR afterwards as a separate operation.
