Help with "Automatic Consolidation"

Thread needs solution

I have been over the help pages and the KB , but just unsure of what actually happens when automatic consolidation is performed.....

What does this actually do, i have acronis installed but have not really bothered about setting limits/conditions.

So if i do set limits on a backup (example) to say maximum 5 backups , then on the 6th backup i would have exceeded the maximum number of backups by one.

So then aotomatic consolidation will be performed.

But this puzzels me a bit after what i have read in the help pages it goes on to say " Automatic Consolidation only can consolidate two backups in one"
So i would have one full backup and 5 incremental ones So what does happen here when automatic consolidation is performed.

I am backing up to a external hard drive, so here is another statement from the help pages.

" Description = Automatic consolidation in acronis true image home can be set up for any backup tasks that creates incremental or differential backups regardless of the archives storage place (EXCEPT FOR REMOVABLE MEDIA"

Hello crowley,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

In case any of the preset limits are exceeded, Acronis True Image Home will combine the first full backup with the next incremental one into one full backup which will be dated the later backup date. Then, if necessary, this backup will be combined with the next, until the occupied storage space (or number of backups) decreases to the preset limit.

Thus, the archive integrity will not be affected, in spite of the fact that the oldest backups will be deleted. This procedure is called automatic consolidation. In the previous versions of Acronis True Image Home a similar procedure was used for automatically managing backup archives in so called backup locations, but
now automatic consolidation is available for all archives except those stored on CD/DVDs.

Thank you.

Thankyou oleg, for getting back to me

Sorry, I'm a new user of Acronis Home True Image 2010, and I'm having some difficulty configuring this the way I wish, and hope you can help.

I would like to do a daily Full backup and keep five full backups. On the sixth day, I would like the earliest backup to be deleted, leaving me with a rolling five-days-worth of backups.

I think that this is accomplished through Automatic Colsolidation, but if I check 'Number of Backups Exceeds: 5' is doesn't save the property on the schedule task.

Am I in the right part of the wizard to do this? Or is there another section I should be looking at?

Have you checked the "schedule tasks" section properly, to make sure you have not missed anything
Section 8 of the user guide, would explain this.

I had made many mistakes in trying this, it was just trial and error, and read the user guide section on
"Schedule task" chapter 8, and creating backup archives chapter 5 about a hundred times.

Hope this helps

I have windows Vista and paid version of Acronis true image 11. I only do full back-ups as required. My back up location will only hold two at a time. I have been trying to set up Automatic deletion of the oldest Backup, so that I do not have to delete manually. I have read the manual, and it is not easy to follow. I wonder if what I am trying to do is only possible with Windows 7, and not with Vista. Is this the case, or not ? Allan

OK Allan, this is what i have set mine to, and it works fine for what i want.

BACKUP METHOD...

I left the incremental option checked, as it will create a new full backup anyway.

Then i selected create new full backup after 4 incremental ones, then i selected the "remove old archives check box.

That way i have a new full backup every month.
then if i want to, i will just delete any old full backups.

Though i am backing up to an external hard disk, so i do have plenty of free space

I don't think you can set automatic deletion of the oldest full backup, i think this only works on incremental or differential ones.
So you would have to do it manually

Hope this helps some what, but if in doubt just post a new topic on this, someone will answer your post

Thanks for the reply, which seems more complex than simple manual deletion of the oldest back-up before making a new one. The Windows 7 Manual (12.4.2) suggests that automatic deletion of full back-ups is possible. If so, is it the case that it is not possible on Vista. Allan.

How long will my back-ups be saved on my External disk (or Online) wthout choosing any option in the Automatic Backup Consolidation?
