HELP understanding the scope of online backup as it relates to networked resources

Thread needs solution

Hi,

So as I've read throughout the forums backing up network resources is not supported in ATIH2012.

Why when I create a backup did the company go through the trouble of coding in a step to ask me to supply log in credentials in order to access the networked resource as part of the initiation of the online backup? It even allows me to specify separate network resource credentials if required (I assume elevated rights that may be required).

If you don't support networked resources getting backed up, why is that functionality even coded into the product? Maybe my assumption is incorrect here.

I have a WHSv1 server on my network that holds my resources (photos/videos/etc.) that I want to have backed up. I can't backup the networked resources via my desktop PC because that isn't supported. I can't backup the information when I install ATIH2012 on the WHS box because of the file system that is used in WHS (because of it's JBOD style of presenting disk stores; when I did it the backup only captured 9GB of data).

So now I'm forced to copy down all of my photo's and videos (100GB) to my local desktop PC from the WHS prior to starting the 2 week backup process for the online storage. So in order to kick off an incremental schedule to capture the delta's I first have to upload any new photos/videos to my WHS from my cameras, intiate a copy to my desktop PC, then initiate an online backup through ATIH2012. All the while tying up network resources on my desktop PC instead of my server (server upload is a lot more desirable).

That's a LOT of heavy lifting but maybe that's the only way I can do this.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

It's supported, but not if the destination is Online Storage.

Yes. It's called Drive Extender. TI 2012 works only with WHS 2011, but not with v1.

So in theory I could schedule a backup job from the networked resource to a local drive then a second schedule from the local drive to the online backup. This would effectively make it light touch in a way I suppose. Painful extra step in there. I should probably bite the bullet and upgrade my WHS to 2011 at some point.

Thanks for the clarification.
