How can I do a differential backup every day and a full backup every friday with True Image Home?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I would like to make a diffential backup every day and a full backup every friday.
The only problem is that sometimes my computer is not used for a day, so telling the program to make 5 differentials before making a full backup, is not working. Then the full backup will be the next time on a saterday and so on...

How can I solve this issue?

Hope to hear from anyone soon.

Kind regards,
John

Check out Grover's True Image Guides: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3426
They are excellent tutorials, illustrated with screenshots, created by a fellow user and forum member His toturoals show how to perform many backup routines, including ones similar to what you want.

The free helper program Chain2Gen has such an option. It will help Acronis to create a full backup only on specific days of the week. Check my signature below for more info about C2G.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: It would be nice if similar abilities were available directly through the software. My reasoning is for defragmentation purposes... The defrag utility that comes with Win7 only lets you defrag on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. Since defragging causes issues with incremental and differential backups, and since probably a huge portion of users use the defrag utility that comes with Windows as opposed to a different one, it would only make sense to add an ability in the ATIH scheduling routine to accomodate this need.

I would like to be able to start an incremental chain on the first day of every month and run a defrag on the last day of every month, or at least on the 28th day of every month. This would make it so defrags occurred only between backup chains thus not interfering with the size of incremental/differential backups. As it stands, I just don't defrag very often. :(

But even so, and as always, my thanks to GroverH for supplying information regarding a work-around. And of course, thanks to oracledba as well...

Chain2Gen also offers the option to run other programs (such as defrag) just prior to the running of full backup.

Currently, the best time to run defrag is via a Windows scheduler and just prior to TI running a backup.

And this method, of course, is well understood. But, this apparent oversight on the part of Acronis, and for years, is just exasperating. It is a simple fix and an obvious problem; and one that the software should be able to natively handle.

But, I honestly hadn't even considered setting up a task directly in the Windows Task Scheduler to run the defrag utility via the command line, as opposed to using the scheduling ability in the utility's GUI. If Acronis refuses to make their scheduling service a little more robust to make it easier on users, why not go with with Microsoft's EXTREMELY robust scheduler?! Good idea. (And I feel a little silly for not thinking of this long ago.)

And again, thank you for pointing out a work-around. Your willingness to help is always appreciated.

On Vista, I used Windows Scheduler to run batch files which triggered ATIH disk image backups and SyncToy file backups, plus some maintenance tasks (Defrag may have been one of them). This allowed for maintenance and backups to occur unattended on user machines. I haven't yet needed to do the same thing on Win7, but I'm sure it could be done.
