How can I remove the dialogue for Credentials for backing up to a Network Shared drive

I just purchased Acronis True Image 2015 build number 6525 on April 28th, 2015. My 30 days of support have ended so I only have you to reach out to for help. I have bought 2013 and 2014 in the past, I've never needed to backup to a shared network drive.

I asked and was told by email prior to my purchase that it would backup to network shared drives.

I get everything configured and when I click backup now it checks credentials and nothing I enter works as credentials. I've added credentials in Credential Manger, tried the computer name and password, I am lost to know what is going on here. I have 2 networks, one is a direct Ethernet cable between 2 computers my laptop and desktop for 1GB transfer between them in a crossover configuration, no internet access and static IP. The other utilizes an Asus AC2400 for protected internet access, dynamic IP, cable and wireless. I tried sharing the drive over wireless and with my direct connect but nothing works with Acronis. They all work for anything else. I am using Windows 8.1 pro on the desktop and Windows 8.1 on the laptop. I even downloaded one of your competitors programs as a free trial and backed up my laptop.

I can access the shared drive in File Explorer, copy files and folders, delete them, everything with out any credentials. I tried a Homegroup, it didn't work so I removed the Homegroup, Acronis see's the drives and will even configure it as the backup location but when I click backup it pauses for awhile and asks for a username and password.

I don't need or want any credentials for this network. It's at my home, it's wired without internet access on the network I want to use. The wireless in protected if I wanted to use that. I've used Acronis for years and been a loyal customer. How can I remove the whole credential thing? If not what are the credentials it is asking for?

By default Acronis TI uses the Admin account of the user under which the application was installed. So that username and password should be what it is looking for.

If your shared drives are located in another computer then the admin logon credentials for that computer may do the trick.

Thank you for your reply. I tried everything and it was the USER Name for the computer that I needed. I was typing in the name I that shows up on my login screen which is "Tomslaptop" and the network name for the computer which is "Y500SLI" but what it wanted was "Tom" which was in the name of the user folder "C:\Users\Tom". I didn't even know that was different from until I looked for it. I don't know why it is different than the one that shows up when I log in or the network name. Now it connects fine over a network.

I have another question: Now that I got the backup working, what is the best Backup Scheme in your opinion. I'm using Full now, is incremental or differential better and still reliable? Can you actually test a backup somehow without reinstalling your computer to itself? I have validate backup turned on now as an advanced option. I just want to make sure my data will be there in the event of a catastrophic failure, like I drop the laptop in the pool. Should I also create the bootable rescue media? If you don't mind helping me, I would appreciate it.

Your questions can be answer in any number of ways and all would have merit. It boils down to a users needs, preferences, and wants.

The differences between incremental and differential basically is that an incremental backup tracks changes to files and when changes are found those changed values are backed up. This results in a small backup size but the down side is that if restore is needed all incremental backups in the chain of backups must be good. If one is corrupt for example any following incremental files become unusable. A differential backup tracks differences in files and once differences are found the files is backed up as a whole. This results in somewhat larger backups but the upside is that if one differential file is corrupt in a chain of differential files only that individual differential file is unusable, all remaining differential files of the chain can be recovered as long as those differential are valid.

A validation of a backup is considered sufficient for determining if the backup is recoverable. Some users wish to perform a recovery of backups to a spare disk or partition for further assurance, again user preference.

You do need to create the boot media and ascertain that your machine can in fact boot from it and that all storage devices can be used with it that you intent to use in your backup plan whatever that turns out to be. If a particular devices proves that it will not work then the plan needs to be changed to accommodate that problem.

Personally, for my laptop I perform a semi monthly Entire PC backup of the machine. The reason for this is because of how I use the machine. I do not install and uninstall apps regularly on the machine. I do not do any type of work projects on the machine that are critical in nature and if I do they are usually just document files that I save to Dropbox and I push them to my NAS at home for long term storage if necessary. So the only things that really change on the machine are Windows and installed app updates. So the idea here is that you need to determine what your usage is and develop a plan that will provide a backup safety net that is best for your usage patterns.

First of all I want to thank you for your time providing such a complete answer. I feel like I know what to do for my backups.

I am having an issue now with the backup validating. The computer backs up just fine and goes through the entire validation process which takes a long time on my 1 TB drive. Based on my figures it is running around 10 mb/sec which I guess is ok. But every time I get the same error now at the end.

First I tried Entire computer which included the main drive and recovery partitions.
then I tried just the C:/ drive and unselected the other drives
then I tried the same C:/ drive and did it sector by sector

always the same error at the end with a red circle with an X inside:

"Failed to exclusively access backup G:\My backups/Toms Lenovo Laptop\Toms_Lenovo_Laptop_full_b3_s1_v1.tib during consolidation. Make sure the backup file is not opened in other applications."

I don't have any other software running except for my ESET NOD antivirus during the backup. I'm backing it up to a 3TB USB 3.0 external hard Drive that is connected directly to one of the 3.0 USB ports on my Y500SLI laptop. The laptop has an I&-3630QM CPU @ 2.4 GHz, 12 MB RAM, 64bit Windows 8.1 OS, and 2 - 650M video cards SLI. I runs everything I throw at it pretty stable so I'm confused why I'm having problems with Acronis.

Hi Enchantech or anyone nice enough to help me with Acronis True Image 2015. I checked and found the backup on the USB drive. When I right click it with the Acronis options and click validate I get a message "Failed to parser XML" or something like that then it seems to start doing the validation. I wanted to mention that in case it helps you to determine what is going on.

Your error indicates that the backup file named is in use by another process or has been blocked by another application such as anti virus. You can try a restart of the machine which should release the backup file from other processes. Once that is done attempt validation again. If that fails then you will need to discover what is blocking the file.
