How does Browse for Backups work?

Thread needs solution

I have a file backup task for 2 data only drives totaling about 850GB. This was an incremental scheme modified with some auto consolidation (1200 GB max). TI had backed up to files named Data to Data_4. I ran chkdsk /r on one of the drives mainly because Acronis Monitor dropped the drive from 98% to 18%. After this, the listed backup size doubled to 1.7GB and TI refused to backup due to insufficient space. In order to fix this, I removed the backup from the list. Then, I used Browse for Backups to reload it. This corrected the backup size problem, but TI seems to not be smart enough to continue the chain. If I browse to the original full, it tries to backup to Data_2(1). If I browse to the last incremental, Data_4, it lists 42GB as the backup size (scary) and backs up to Data_4(1). What is the correct procedure?

I've been dealing with PC's for 30 years, so this isn't my 1st rodeo. I've bought several versions of TIH over the years and have always abandoned them because the program just seems to be too easy to run into the weeds. I might be doing that again for the last time.
