how to register a trial version - that has already been backed up - still needing an answer

Thread needs solution

i deserve to be flamed for this .. but here it goes.
after downloading the trial version, i created a backup cd then spent three hours removing a 500 gb hard drive in my Dell laptop and placing a new 750 gb drive. you all know where this is going.. i have no way of formating the new drive due to the trial version not working (of course i saw no warning of this although I confess to not reading all the legalese)
I would love to give acronis my credit card number but the boot disk it (they) let me create will not reflect any registration i may go through..
Needless to say - this really hacks me off -- and I OWN a earlier version of acronis and was (WAS) telling people how much i liked it ... any ideas???

Rick,
What version of Windows? What type computer?

If trial download installed, user can create a bootable recovery CD and this CD will perform restores.

If you register your trial serial with Acrons, then from inside your personal account, you will have download access to an "bootable media" iso file. Once downloaded, you can burn the iso file as an image onto a blank CD. Or, If using Windows 7, after download, RIGHT click on the iso file and choose the "OPEN WITH" COMMAND and choose the Windows Disk Image Burner.

The trial version of the bootable CD should enable you to recover the backup. Hopefully, you were wise enough to include all your partitions within the backup including any Recovery or non-lettered partitions.

Aconris support will help you with recovery issues even if it is the trial version. Support button in top right corner of this webpage or listed also left margin of this webpage.

Hi and THANKS..
Windows 7 on Dell inspiron M5010 -- I replaced the hard drive and have the system back up and running.
Went online, and added the trial version to my registered versions .. then downloaded the bootable media ISO.

Restarted with CD in first boot place.. booted to acronis, chose the tools options.. then Clone Disk (should have tried that earlier - would have saved me lots of work)
selected the source drive and selected the new hard drive (in an enclosure that i plan on placing the old drive when i get them swapped)

was warned about the loss of data .. hit proceed.... and

POP UP ___ this is a trial version of True Image and cannot perform this task..

Bottom line is the trial version is worthless.. I have restored my system and have lost nothing but time. No harm done. I will confirm there are no better options for a single user (freeware - ghost, GRUB etc) then fork over the 49 bucks to get this done right. (still kinda mad about this trial thingy)

Any other options that I have not thought of? let me know..

Thanks again

Not sure what drive type you have, if Western Digital try this (may work even if drive isn't WD, although I'm not sure)

On the Western Digital site they have a WD Acronis version (that's somewhat restricted & basic/older) but believe it does allow clone ops.
look for downloads/Mobile & AV-25/...., the Blue Cavier drives....see link below-

I do recommend getting the full version when you can as scheduled backups work best (nothing to remember)
Nice option is to get one of the External Blac-X devices and use that for your cloning ops, works great, especially with E-SATA if you have the ports.
Mark

Just a note - the trial version won't clone.

You can make images and recover them within the 15 day trial period, the trial recovery CD will always allow recovery even outside the 15 day trial.

The list of restrictions on the trial versions can be found here:trial limitations

thanks for the assist.
The first attempt was to recover after replacing the HD with a new and bigger one. That was where I first encoutered the popup stating the trial version will not allow this. That was using the disk created before I registered the trial product. The second attempt was after re-installing the origional hard drive and trying the clone method.

From what you are telling me - I have been caught by two unforseen conditions. One was trying a recovery boot disk prior to registration- thus failed to allow the recovery. The other was the attempt to clone which I see in the link Colin provided, will not work either.

If I could get a confirmation that the boot disk created directly from the onlne is the only way to aquire the recovery onto the new drive, I will suffer throught one more hard drive swap ( every time this thing gets taken apart shows more and more on the keyboard and tabs that are pried apart)

One more side note -- Both drives are Western Dig so at this time the laptop is setting with a blank screen after two tries to use the Western Digital Edition. It ask to reboot, then goes to the acronis startup .. then blank screen. I did remove the trial version b4 loading the WD SE version. I am letting it set for 60-90 minutes in case that is normal...

Thanks again for the help

Yes, use the recovery ISO from your account. You still won't be able to clone, but will be able to recover an image.

Rick,
Be careful if you have tried to use both the Acronis trial and the WD or Seagate versions of TrueImage. Two versions CANNOT co-exist.
If the vendor versions have been installed, You will need to run the Acronis cleanup utility before installing the trial or versa vica.

Having a iso download of the recovery CD is a late addition to the trial package.
The intended purpose of the having the iso download available was to enable the current trial recovery CD to be used to restore backups of prior versions of backups without needing to install the trial in order to just be able to make the CD. So having the iso download is a great convenience for many as it saves a lot of hassle.

Limitation of the Trial version
30 day trial period
CD can only be used for Recovery. Backup and clone are disabled.
Installed version: Backup enabled. Clone disabled.

great info from you both!!
I will need to decide which route to take and then be sure I have all my ducks in a row.
May be a day or two but I will post when it is done.

thanks again

I hope for this to be my last plea for help - but is there a easy link to the Acronis cleanup utility?
I think I am going to retry the WD SE version next - if i can get a clean version.

again thanks
