I cannot get it running

When I start it up, it says activation required, even though I have used the product on this machine previously.
The only option available after that is to change the serial number.
I put in the number and the previous serial number ( it was an upgrade ), but after that nothing happens the dialog just hangs there.
Is there anything else I can do ?
