Image and File backups
I have Acronis v9. I am not very experienced with any backup software and simply been confused by them. I recenly had a scare when my computer got a missing hal.ddl message. I had original recovery cd (gateway netbook Win Xp no original OS disks). I finally corrected with a new MBR. So now want to understand the best way to prevent problems in future. Forgive me if this is asked a million times or referr me to articles.
If I create an Image backup, I do understand it is a snapshot of MBR and files at that moment only - forever. If I restore using it, I go back to that time and state.
I have many programs that are regestered as a one time registration. If need new hard drive or do restore I can not reload program and register again - part of free software giveaway program.
So after doing an Image, in the ensuing weeks how go I start using incremental backups? Do I use original Image or start a new file backup and then do incrementals?

My Win XP Dell laptop has a D-drive with the backup software. But I do not seem to have access to the Recovery disk.
I have a recovery disk created for Acronis True Image. [I probably tossed the original Dell recovery disk when I created the Acronis recovery disk.]
Can I clear the C-drive and use the Acronis recovery disk to reload the original software.
I wish to reload everything because there is too much JUNK on the laptop.
If I were to reload from the D-drive, then I realize that I would use the Acronis backup for my personal files.

Do you mean the Acronis software? or some backup?

These 2 are very different. The Dell recovery disk puts the disk back to where it was when the computer exited the factory. Any app or content you added since your started the computer the first is deleted in that recovery. The ACronis (ATI) recovery CD allows you to boot the computer and run a version of ATI without starting Windows, and to restore a disk image.

I am not sure what you are trying to do... Don't clear anything before we clarify this. If you clear the C:\ drive you will have to:
- either reinstall Windows, your apps (including ATI), and your content. You need a backup or a copy of your content to do that,
- or restore a disk image with the ATI recovery CD. This will put the computer back to where it was, but not clear the "junk".
If I were to reload from the D-drive, then I realize that I would use the Acronis backup for my personal files.
If you have a complete disk image of C:\, you can restore the image as a whole disk OR any only the files included in the image backup. If you have a file backup of the content on C:\ you can also restore this way
