Imperfect Clone

Thread needs solution

True image 2012.
I used this excellent program several times before w/ perfect results, mostly upgrading the size of the hard disk and once even recovering my complete system. Windows 7 64bit was clean instaled in a 360GB disk, later moved to a 500GB and even eventually to a 500GB 10K rpm. Always perfect. Last source disk saved. Now I tried to upgrade to a 1TB 7.2 rpm disk.
Previous disks were SATA2, the last one SATA3.
The cloning was pronunced completed satizfactorily and the HD work perhaps 99% well. The disk boot ok, & is faster. But there some malfunctions in some programs such as MS Office Outlook and some pages do not display in IE9, as they did before.
Cloning was made by booting from USB, as allways. Cloning was repeated with identical results. Reinstal Office 2007 did not correct, the problems.
1] Why? 2] Would version 2013 cloner correct this? 3] Sugestions?
Cheers

Is it possible that your disk is an advanced format disk, whereas the older not?

Both disk, from same maker, formatted in the same computer, as a single NTFS partition, by the same OS. Or perhaps I fail to understand your question; you could certainly might have some knowledge I have not. No, not a RAID.
Thanks for the interest.

AF (Advanced Format) disks are not apparent to the user unless the drive is marked as such (not all are). You must refer to the specific documentation for your drive or the manufacturers website for details about your disks. If you are cloning to or restoring a backup from standard format drive with 512 Bytes per sector to an AF drive with 4K bytes per sector, you can have multiple issues that manifest themselves in differing ways. First and foremost, Windows Update will no longer work properly. This is a sure sign that a clone or restore from a disk image was performed from a standard format disk to an Advance Format disk drive.

There are fixes for these type of issues.

If you have Intel's RST software, an update to the latest version is necessary for support of these new drives. In addition there are patches from Microsoft to address these issues as well.

Please see this article from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018

James, appreciate very much your comment. I am here to learn and try to solve a problem beyond my capacity.
Hitachi technical info on this new drive, which is the one giving me the problem, states: ・
Configuration
Interface SATA 6Gb/s
Capacity (GB)1 1TB
Sector size (bytes)2 512e
Recording zones 30
Aerial density (max, Gbit/sq.in.) 676
The URL is:

The source drive is another Travelstar drive
http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/3FDCAB792901CF4B862575D80…
Not sure if can be a problem between 512 and 512A, which is an emulation.
At any rate, there is nothing that I can appreciate as AF, but I would not know it if it bit me.
Appreciate very much your interest.
Cheers

The new (target) drive is an AF drive with 4KB sectors.
From the pdf file you referenced:

• Advanced Format, industry standard 4K sector size
• 512 byte emulation (512e)

The old (source) drive is not an AF drive.
From the pdf link you referenced"

•Sector size (bytes) 512

Therefore you did indeed clone a non AF drive to an AF drive, and the issues you are experiencing are the result Windows and other software installed on your system not handling the change from non AF to AF drives properly.

To help and correct the issue present on your system, we need to know what programs are installed on the computer.
Please open Control Panel and select Programs and Features or Uninstall a program to view the list of installed applications, and capture the screen or screens and post them here if your wish.

In addition, the link I referenced in the earlier post has a hotfix (KB982018) that should be applied if possible.
For Windows 7 64 bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=a8cd6aa3-948e-…

Again, if you have Intel's Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver/application installed, you would need to download and install the lastest version of the Intel Chipset Installation utility and the latest version of the Intel RST driver/application for your system.

In addition, after applying the Windows update, running the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and installing the Intel RST driver/software, you would also need to open the Windows Indexing Options and re-create the Search Index.

Do not install any Intel software on your system until you verify that you do in fact have Intel hard disk controllers and CPU in your system.

If you can provide additional system information, I can help you find what you need.

This issue is not specific to Acronis, but applies to any disk imaging software when moving from non AF drive to AF drives.

Ideally, the fixes should be installed to the source drive BEFORE cloning or disk image and restore to the new drive. This would prevent the issues on the target drive/OS from ever happening.

If you still have the source drive, apply the KB982018 hotfix and/or any Intel updated utilities/drivers/applications, before the clone or imaging/restore procedure.

James

Very appreciative of your expertise.
So, that is what AF is.
Because I am having some surgery today, I will not be able to do much until Saturday.
Again thanks,
Rolando

Will wait to here back.

I am Back
The (KB982018) has been previously installed.
The CPU and storage drivers are Intel. I have not updated the chipset as none has been offered by Lenovo, which keeps the machine updated to the source drive.
There are 232 items in Programs and Features. Intel's Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver/application is not present.
Thanks

If you have "show updates" turned on this may be true, but I doubt you have installed 232 programs on your system. Please check the list again, with "show updates" turned off. It would be nice to see a list of the applications that are installed.

Well, that was with the updates off. There are 256 updates listed separately. Windows 7 keeps then separate and they will not show all together.
Edit command has Select All and Copy grayed out.
Cheers.

I found a way to please you. Got a listing of Programs & Features.
Is attached.
Cheers

Rolando,

I'm pretty busy now, and have briefly looked at your installed programs (thanks for the list).

Do you still have the "original source" disk?

Have you tried placing it back in the system?

If so, do you have any of the problems you mentioned that appeared after installation of the "cloned target drive"?

Sorry I am troubling you so much.
Actually it is the source disk what I am using now.
There are absolutely no problems.
This is one of those laptops in which you can place two disks and boot your choice.
Cheers.

I hate to burden you more but I just recover from a peculiar status.
I downloaded and installed HGST Acronis Alignment tool just to test. It needed a reboot to "replace" some files from True Image.
Well, the tool just told me that my drives, after scanning, were align. Nothing else was done.
But then I notice two of the defects (this is in my source drive) that I was having with the new (target) drive:
1] Disconnected my network 2] No pictures in my Outlook 2007 emails.
Immediately the tool was uninstalled and after reboot, everything was back to normal.
Make your own conclusion but, to me, there is something wrong with Acronis software.
Cheers.

Rolando,

The reason I asked about any issues you were/are having, is because you have a system that has so many toolbars and additional software that can have detrimental effects on IE (and any program that depends on IE to work properly) that I would be surprised if you weren't having some issues with the original from time to time also.

I would highly suggest that you have an experienced computer support person take a look at your system, and perform some basic "tune-up" procedures.

The target of your clone is inheriting any issues that your source drive may or may not display, and they may be more pronounced on the new AF drive because some of the utilities installed, even Lenovo sourced, and could need to be updated.

One issue you should correct right away, is to remove any older versions of JAVA that are installed on your system. You should only have the one version of JAVA installed (version 7 update 13 is current, today). All older versions of JAVA present a large security risk to your system.

What you might see in that list does not means is active. IE 10, other than the usual from itself (Menu, Favorites, Communications and Status) only has Google. Is unfortunate that every body wants to have a toolbar, but none are active.
You might not believe it but I started computing in 1984 with a Commodore 64. My son is a Computers Sciences and MS Engineer, which was my teacher for constructing and configuring 33 desktops during several years. From 286, 386, 486 (all three still working) and several Pentiums for relatives and friends. There are today in my house 3 laptops and 4 desktops, one is gamer of one of my grandsons. When my family visits, there are about 9 more laptops. I am a physician thus do not pretend to be up with the latest.
This and all others computers are up to date with Windows and even Xenix (perhaps you are not familiar) Lenovo has an excellent service to update.
I do not pretend to be a professional, but even my son with his degrees call me sometimes.
He usually do some checking for me finding sometimes things he was no aware off.
This laptop is not only 6 years old, 5 on warranty a with new motherboard now a year old. But it has always work flawlessly.
You are right about Java and I will clean it up. And I will continue to deactivate toolbars, unfortunately sometimes you can not avoid them been downloaded.
Cheers

I meant no disrespect about your abilities with computers, and yes I know what Xenix is (Microsoft Unix).

I would take a look at the ILivid application(s) - Bandoo Media (http://download.cnet.com/iLivid-Download-Manager/3640-2071_4-12735286.h…) and un-install the toolbars, not just deactivate them.
Octoshape from Adode , too. (https://windowssecrets.com/known-issues/cnn-coms-use-of-octoshape-puts-…)

No disrespect taken. Just sometimes is necessary to know the credentials of a person, to better help.
Thanks for the info I was not aware off. Several toolbars I could identify and not in use have been uninstalled, Octoshape included, which was not active. ILivid I use to download YouTube videos. Works great for that purpose but I was not aware of its problems. As suggested, I will try to obtain the program to uninstall it as well as getting a substitute.
I also use autoruns.exe to control a great deal of the installed programs.
Java 32 versions were present because prior to IE-10, W-7 64bit had 32 and 64 versions of IE-9 and each required a corresponding Java, as I am sure you are aware. But because the present IE-10 64b is still a prerelease one I did not wanted to perhaps overdo it.
At any rate and through all this, I have no complains about my laptop performance.
By the way and since you did not suggested it, I take it you are not aware of how I got the txt file of Programs & Features. If you open P&F with C Cleaner, it will let you export such text file. I also use C Cleaner rather gingerly and rarely. I am not a registry cleaner fan. Those programs are not capable of determine the true in relation to mainly Virtual PC and XP Mode, as well as removable drives info.
Hoping that now will get back to the problem of the cloning.
Would I be better to reformat the new drive to default (4096 bytes) and copy (not cloning) into it, with Acronis booted from a USB device? Must remember that my original plan was reformatting default (4kb) the new drive, but when you use cloning, Acronis will delete the current partition and create a new one, at with point it got very likely converted to 512.
Cheers

You are confusing the "cluster" size used during format operations, and the "sector" size of the underlying disk technology.

See this for "cluster" size information. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140365/EN-US

Your AF drive will always have 4096K Byte sectors presented to the system as 512 Byte sectors (512e). This is not changeable.

When formatting your drive, the "cluster" size can (but should not be without special needs) be changed from the default (4096KB per cluster).

Thanks. Keep in mind I love to learn from a professional. Have no fear, being wrong is corrected with knowledge. Be sure that if it is a surgical problem, I will do the same to you, with my best intentions.

After initializing the new drive in to W-7 and creating the NTFS partition, it was then of course formatted default at 4096Kb, which took 7 hours to complete witting W-7.
Acronis is boot from a USB.,
And this is what I do not understand about the Cloning process; which at this point will state that there is a partition in the disk, which must deleted in order to continue. Yes, this is not my first time with this and previously every thing resulted Ok.
So you allow Acronis to delete the partition, it will create another one, format it default (no?) and clone the disk, ALL IN 58 MINUTES. Something must be different in the procedure!
In the past I use to just copy from a different OS with perfects results.
My desktops are multiboot with all SCSI drives, reason for which I had W-98, NT4, W2k, XP and Xenix, in separate drives but in same machine.
Now, as I previously proposed, could I do the same with W-7?
Cheers
