Kris' quick guide to getting started with TIH2011 (build 6868)
Kris' TIH2011 basics, with much credit to Gene Barlow at ugr.com .
The intent here is to offer a 1-page guide to help folks get started with Acronis True Image Home 2011 - which is a tad different from TIH2010 .
Install:
Nothing obtuse about the install, but I recommend uninstalling previous version(s) of Acronis True Image before installing it.
Use:
Initial:
Start TIH2011 by clicking on it. on the first page, which tries to get you to use their one-click backup, un-check "show at startup" (bottom left) and click the main option "Go to main screen" .
Click on "Disk and Partition Backup".
Click on "disk backup options" (bottom left). (this gives you 4 tabs)
Backup scheme tab: choose "custom scheme" and "full". (this mini guide makes no attempt re incremental).
Advanced tab: "Validation" - check the box to validate a backup when it's created.
Performance tab: choose normal compression, and high priority (unless you do other things whilst backing up).
Notification tab: check "show notification..." "100mb"
IMPORTANT: whenever in these options, check "save the settings as default" (lower left), and click OK.
Initial2: (create folders where you will store the backups)(done separately from Acronis)
If I want to back up my system partition separately to D, and G, I create folders D:\Acronis Backups\C ,
and G:\Acronis Backups\C . Obviously any name will work - I shoot for names that are meaningful to me.
1st backup to a given folder:
Click on "Disk and Partition Backup". check the partition(s) you wish to back up (probably System and Win).
Below the partition list, you will see "Destination" and a large (generic!) rectangle. In that rectangle, way over to the right, click the down-pointer, and once there, go way down to the bottom and choose "Browse".
Now simply browse to your chosen target folder - let's say G:\Acronis Backups\C .
Then, WHILE STILL BROWSING, in bottom left note the default BASIC data set name. Change it perhaps to
Win7SP1 (C)
or whatever is meaningful.
Then, WHILE STILL BROWSING, on bottom right see button to "add date (@date@)". Click on this pull down menu to add date, and time, if desired.
Click OK at the bottom. This gets rid of the options menu.
At the bottom, click "back up now"
It will show your new tailored (to a specific partition/target folder combo) rectangle for this backup and a progress bar. (validation time estimates are absurd!)
When done, you can use Win Explorer to explore your new .tib backup, just as before.
Subsequent backup to this folder:
in the appropriate rectangle, click on "backup now". It will show a progress bar. All done!
Note, you cannot add a comment until you have already created a backup. A serious shortcoming imho.
Note, apparently deletes of incremental backups has a serious bug, so I just avoid them.
Note, rectangles are unique by ((source partition) to (target folder)). Create as many as you need.
