Lightroom & sync

I have a problem that when I set up sync between My Pictures folder on my PC & a network drive, it created a duplicate set of photos in both drives. I contacted the Acronis chat room and they suggested deleting the sync and creating a new one. I have Adobe Lightroom on my computer and this creates its own database of photos and am now wondering if this is perhaps causing the duplication. Has anyone else got Lightroom on their computer and using sync? I am just wondering if anybody else has struck this problem. I have deleted the original sync and have spent ages removing all the duplicates but don't want to set up another one and go through the whole process again.
