My system vs. Local disk (C:) backup

Thread needs solution

I'm using the 2011 edition of Acronis True Image Home and haven't had any problems making the backups, but haven't had to restore anything yet. My question......Two backups, My system and Local disk (C:), are written to my external backup disk drive and they are of identical size (43 GB). Are these duplicates, and are they both needed? My purpose for these backups is to be able to recover from a crash, not to archive data. Thanks for your help. - Dave

Dave,

If the 'My System' image was made via the Welcome screen option 'Backup my critical data' it more than likely is an exact copy of a later one that you may have made manually by making your own task.

You can double check in two ways. First, attempt to 'Recover' each image, make sure you are looking at the image in disk mode with show MBR selected (bottom left hand corner of form) , this will show you the disk structure of the image. Obviously don't tick or click on recover now, if both list of items for recovery are the same then they are duplicates. The other option is to mount the files.

The System image option will include the System Reserved partition (if you have one) and whichever partition contains your OS files normally as in your case the C:\ partition.

To delete one of the images make sure you delete from within TIH. Select the image you wish to delete by right clicking on it in the task list and select delete, this will remove it from the task list and delete the image.

Colin - Thanks for your response, you were right, they were duplicates. In the future I'll go directly to the Home screen and select "Disk and partition backup", which I think will provide me the ability to recover from a crash. Again, thanks for your help, you saved me lots of disk space. - Dave
