Need confirmation of restore process using True Image 11.0 Home

Thread needs solution

We need to re-install Windows Vista and restore all the current files and applications back to the machine, but have never actually done a restore with True Image, so we are asking for confirmation that our intended procedure is correct. Here's the plan:

1. Use True Image 11.0 Home to create a disc image of C:\ on an external hard drive.

2. Reinstall Vista from D:\ (this is an HP Media center computer, restore disc is on a hard drive partition).

3. Start the computer from the Acronis boot disc made previously - this will run True Image which will allow us to restore all files and folders from the external drive, so that we end up with everything as it was, except running on a fresh copy of the operating system. In particular, we don't want to accidentally copy the operating system back from the image and defeat the whole exercise.

Does look like the right way to proceed? I will be grateful for any and all comments.

Thank you very much,
Manley Keeler

If you need to reinstall Vista, do it before you backup!

Unless you want to do a clean install of Vista, reinstall all your programs and updates manually, and then pick the content from the ATI backup...

The point is that you cannot backup the apps separately from the OS.

At any rate, don't install Vista before restoring the complete image of ATI as a partition: ATI will first erase the partition before restoring the complete partition. So your prior Vista installation will be lost.

If you restore only certain files and folders (not the complete partition), your process looks good. Remember you will have to reinstall all the apps.

Thank you Pat, you saved us a lot of hours of re-installing a lot of apps.

If we do an ATI disc image, then can we use that file with the ATI boot disc to install everything to a new hard drive, replace the existing drive with the new one, and be back to today's condition?

Thanks again, really appreciate your help.

Yes you can use ATI to restore a disk completely as it was before a crash or a serious problem, and you can restore to a new disk, even of a different size or model in the *same* computer.,

If you want to restore to another computer, you will have to use Universal Restore, a feature that comes with the Plus Pack, a paid for addon available in more recent versions.

Thanks again - Glad to learn about Universal Restore, as we may very well want to transfer our present setup to a new computer.
