Need help with restoring image and question about MBR restore

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my HP Notebook hard drive from 200GB to 500GB. There are 2 partitions, one for HP_RECOVERY (D: FAT32 4.5GB) and the other HP_PAVILION (C: NTFS approx 180GB) is the OS and program/files.

Am I doing the image and restoring processes correctly? I have Acronis TrueImage Home 2011 and made separate images of the HP_RECOVERY D: and HP_PAVILION C: drives. Then on the new drive i created a recovery partition (FAT32 approx 4.6GB) to recover the HP_RECOVERY image, and on the remainder of the new drive i created a large NTFS partition approx 495GB to recover the HP_PAVILION files. I am testing out the recovery images but I noticed there was a link that showed an MBR recovery? Should I be using that instead? the MBR image was 186GB which is more space than what I see in My Computer for the HP_PAVILION drive reading at 180GB, why?? is it including the HP_RECOVERY partition too?

Does the TI image of HP_PAVILION copy the MBR from the original drive?

thanks

Mike,
A picture is worth a thousand words. Would you consider posting a picture of your Windows Disk Management graphical view so we can see which is active and the sequence of partitions.

Which operating system?

It is much easier to work with a backup which contains everything on the disk including all partitions including those that might be non-lettered or diagnostic, etc. When performing the backup, checkmark the disk option so it includes everything.

Windows XP SP3 on both drives new and old.

I tried my test recovery on the new drive and it booted fine so I guess I answered my own question, the MBR does get copied in the image.
