Not enough privileges to perform the operation

Thread needs solution

I am trying to clone my current Hard disk (150gb Seagate) which is failing fast, to my external Freecom 150gb HD (both NTFS). Where it needs to reboot I get a message "Failed to update Registry. Cannot reboot Windows. You probably do not have enough privileges to perform the operation". I have seen this problem in a previous post, and the answer was to make a rescue bootable disk, boot from there and do the clone. This I tried but I get exactly the same message. I have also tried to do it in Safe Mode, but no luck there either. I run XP SP3 on a HP Compaq Presario desktop, 5 years old. I am the administrator and as far as I know how, am running full privileges.. There have probably been other posts about this but I have looked and cannot at present see any. Any help much appreciated.

Hello Enrico,

Let me assist you.

Acronis software addresses to the following value in Windows registry when requesting a reboot:

  • Registry key: HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
  • Value: BootExecute (TYPE: REG_MULTI_SZ)

If the value is missing or does not have the necessary permissions type, then the request for reboot fails.

Please check if you have full control over the registry key. Right-click on it and select Permissions.

  • HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

If checking Permissions does not reveal any problem, then a new value needs to be created. Right-click in the value field of the registry key and select New -> Multi-String Value. Create BootExecute (TYPE: REG_MULTI_SZ).

  • Registry key: HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
  • Value: BootExecute (TYPE: REG_MULTI_SZ)

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.

Hello Ilya and thank you. I do have a "Boot Execute" value in the Session Manager, but the Type is REG_EXPAND_SZ. It has the "Value Data" as : "autocheck autochk /K:CDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ *"
I seem to have all permissions OK, so could you tell me if I should leave this entry intact and create another "Boot Execute" value? If so, what,if anything, should I put in the "Value Data" field? Many tha`nks for your assistance.
Regards,
Enrico

Hello Enrico,

I recommend you to delete the old BootExecute key and create a new one with the correct value.

After that please reboot and check if the issue still persists.

Thank you.
