Not happy with Home 2011! Edit Authentication Settings and Single Version scheme

Thread needs solution

I'm been an Acronis Home user for many years. Up until the 2011 version it worked great. 2011 is a train wreck.

First. No matter what I do, when I try to connect to my NAS server, authentication fails even though I enter the proper credentials. I see no option to edit the actual path like instead of the UNC that is there by default. There is no way to enter the \\IP address\username path as there was in 2010. I also noticed there are several topics for this issue and to date, Acronis support and I use that term lightly, is nowhere to be found.

2nd. The Single Version scheme is great except it appears to be setup as the tail wagging the dog. It creates the backup first, then deletes the old one. That's great if you have a lot of space but if one of the backups is to a 300 GB drive, as mine is, it run out of space and fails. Again, I did not have this problem with 2010.

On a side note, when I go to create a new 'file' backup. About half the time, no drives or anything shows up. The screen is blank. Other times, the drives show up. I guess it's a mood thing.

Finally, looking through support, it appears greed has taken over common sense in the way of support. Support should not COST users when the issue is related to a software flaw!

I will be going back to 2010. Then looking for a new backup solution and drop Acronis all together. I don't mind flaws and troubleshooting problems but what I DO mind is Acronis's lack of attention to this issue and lack of free support in cases like this. That is unacceptable.

Caveat: I've been in the IT business for 13 years and know my way around computers.

Wish I could provide an answer to this, but I'm in the same boat as you. I have the drive mapped just fine and I can create/edit/delete files on the share without issues in explorer. The second I try to access the share from TIH 2011, I get prompted for authentication credentials and it fails. Looking at the security log on the remote machine, I can see that I am getting successful login messages, but for some reason TIH says it can't connect. I ran Process Monitor to see if that might shed any light and I see that before I get prompted for the credentials, TrueImage.exe tries a CreateFile operation on the share and gets ACCESS DENIED while impersonating the ID on the local machine. After I type in credentials for the remote share and click Connect, I don't see any ACCESS DENIED messages, just these strange entries.

2:24:42.8121951 PM TrueImage.exe 5000 CreateFile \\;RdpDr\;:1\remoteserver\ BAD NETWORK NAME Desired Access: Read Attributes, Disposition: Open, Options: Open For Backup, Open Reparse Point, Attributes: n/a, ShareMode: Read, Write, Delete, AllocationSize: n/a

To me, it seems like TIH is the problem, not the security settings on my remote server. Everything else can access the share and write to it just fine.

I don't want to get anyones hopes up (including mine), but I may have gotten it to work. This really isn't a fix, more of a workaround. I had same username passwords setup on both machines and that kept failing for some reason. I tried the connection using a different username that existed on the remote destination machine and it worked. Seems like TIH 2011 doesn't like same usernames across different machines.

Did you just set up a new user name for the machine or did you also go into the file share and put that user name in there as well? I added a new username and that didn't work for me.

I may have found a solution to this issue. I was experiencing the same issues using TIH 2011 (Build 6696) in a domain setting. I was sure I was answering the user name and password correctly when prompted to access a shared external backup hard drive off the domain server. I could access the drive from Windows 7 Business Explorer with full read / write options. I tried using the administrators account and proper password (no luck) - domainservername\administrator with correct password (no luck), IP address of domain server\adminiistrator with correct password (no luck). I even altered the registry of the Windows 7 system and the registry of the domain server to include IRPStackSize DWord with it set to hexdecimal 15 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters which is sometimes required in various settings. After which I rebooted both systems (no luck). I tried rebooting the router (no luck).

Finally I decided to log into the Windows 7 system locally as administrator and attempt one more time to get the Acronis software to setup. I first attempted to access the shared external backup hard drive on the domain server to see if I could get read / write options. I was presented with a Windows dialog box asking for user name and password which I answered correctly and chose to have it save my settings. I then launched Acronis and tried one more time and at Edit Authentication step I entered the same username and password and got access. Was able to setup a scheduled backup and perform a test. The schedule backups ran perfectly next time.

I hope this solution helps some of you.
