Not shutting down after backup
Pretty straight forward. Set to backup at 10pm and then shutdown computer. But, it's not shutting the laptop down when the backup is complete. Check the settings and things look fine. Any ideas?

Never used this tool. Only the options in the user interface.
I set this PC to run the backup at 10pm and for Acronis to shutdown the PC when the task is done.

Have you confirmed by the log that the backup is running and successfully completed.
Make sure the computer is not going to sleep without completing the backup.

I've changed the PC setting to be sure this isn't happening. It's now doing the backup at 10pm but not shutting the PC down.
It's also set to email me a log file if there are any errors. Not receiving anything. I've tested the email setup in the Acronis app and my email settings tested fine.

While I cannot provide a fix or cure for your shutdown issue, I can suggest a workaround which should enable your computer to perform a routine shutdown following the completion of the backup.
Rather than use TrueImage to instruct your computer to shutdown at end of a backup, consider using a different method whereas True Image enables Windows to perform the shutdown via a separate batch/command file.
Instructions for use with Windows 7:
1. Copy the entire command below into your clipboard.
%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE /s /t 180 /c "Shutdown in 180 seconds" /d p:4:1
2 . Go to
Start/All Program/Accessories
Right Click on Notepad
Choose "Run an Administrator".
Paste the contents of your clipboard into Notepad so that you see this data residing inside Notepad
%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE /s /t 180 /c "Shutdown in 180 seconds" /d p:4:1
(The copy/paste method much easier and more accurate. In this example, shutdown is pre-planned to occur 180 seconds after backups complete. You can change the 180 to another figure. Note: Windows 7 uses a "/" for commands. XP uses a "-".)
3. Perform a File Save as and save the file into the root of drive C by typing the drive letter & path and name as below.
C:\Timed-shutdown.CMD
The resulting path would be
C:\Timed-shutdown.CMD
CLOSE NOTEPAD.
4. Create a new Disk & Partition backup task and GO TO:Disk Backup Options/Advanced Tab/Pre-Post Commands/ Use Custom commands/Post Window. (Confirm you have selected the POST option--not the PRE option).
Click the Edit button and browse to COMPUTER/DRIVE C and select the TIMED-SHUTDOWN.CMD file (from the root of Drive C) and click OPEN.
The result should make the TIMED-SHUTDOWN.CMD appear inside the command window.
Click OK
Instructions continued below.

5. Double check to make sure the Acronis shutdown option setting is no longer checked inside the Disk Backup Options/Advance tab.
6. If finished with task creation, Click the Backup Later option to finalize the task creation.
7. . Every time the backup runs, at the end of the backup, you should get a desktop message indicating shutdown will occur in 180 seconds.
-----------------------------------------------------
Troubleshooting before use.
8. Strongly recommend you add a desktop shortcut which will enable you to cancel the shutdown from completion if you wish to continue using the computer or for testing purposes.
Right click on some empty space on your desktop
Choose New
Choose Shortcut
Type the location of the item (which is)
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE /A
Click NEXT
Type a name for the shortcut (which is)
Stop Timed Shutdown
Click Finish
use your mouse pointer and grab hold of the shortcut and move its location to a location of your choosing. I put mine in lower left corner of the desktop.
9. . One of the first tests should be open Windows Explore and browse to Drive C.
Locate and DBL CLICK on Timed-Shutdown.CMD
The shutdown in 180 seconds alert Window should appear on your desktop.
To prevent the shutdown from completing, press the Stop Timed Shutdown desktop shortcut completed in step #8.
A successful test should indicate that the same will be successful as part of your backup command.
Use these procedures as part of manual or scheduled backup.
Good Luck!

Grover: I'll come back to look at this in more detail. I did not get emailed on your update.
I have been seeing an old problem come back on my PCs as well that I thought was resolved. That is I have my backups to run when I tell Windows to shut down. But the backups just hang with that message "Operations are in progress please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete".

I continue to see this problem reported on the forum. Not sure of the fix. Why not kick off the backup manually from a desktop shortcut and have the task include the shutdown command as I have suggested. Just a thought.
Or maybe use the Windows scheduler with the on shutdown option.

I like to keep it simple for myself and those I have as clients. So, when they are using their PC and are done for the day then they will tell Windows to shut down. Then Acronis kicks in and runs the backup and then the PC shuts down. Simple, something no ones needs to remember or do anything about. I've had people who get busy and overlook doing little tasks. TIH has been able to do this, or so they say, for a long time. Think it was just one version around the time that Win7 came out. Might have been an update to fix that one. Don't remember off hand.

Well... I've started over from scratch with this and think I have it setup. Once done configuring the new backup I went ahead and kicked the backup off instead of waiting for 10pm to come around. Here's a screenshot to verify I was on the right path:

Your results will mostly show the correctness of the procedures. The items displayed appear to be correct except the picture does now show whether you are working the the pre command (wrong) or the post command (correct); and of course the content of the cmd file is not displayed. The results will provide the answer.

True. I did choose the right command but you make an excellent point. I should have taken two screen shots. I wanted this as there were other optoins you didn't mention and I wasn't sure if it mattered.
As for my HP laptop and the restore. What a fubar. I've seen other issues in this forum of the same. I've restore before without issue but I do believe it was 2012 and not 2013. Wondering if this is a bug. Not happy with their software. WTH ever happened to it works as advertised. I get it if I buy some junk brand of PC off of a banana boat. I've spent a lot of time working through issues with their support to get the software running correctly. Out of my years of experience I really do consider Acronis to be slow at response and poor with fixes. I agree with some of the remarks here that it looks like beta testing.

Were you successful in getting your system to shutdown after the backup as you describe in post #9?
"Which other options" were you concerned about? I intended to only involve those associated with the shutdown. Whatever options you wanted to use with the task were not a consideration of mine.
As for the Laptop. Is your intention to do a restore (using my guide) as I suggested restoring one partition at a time? I'll be glad to assist if you have questions about the procedure I have recommended.

No, however I did run the backup manually yesterday when I was remoted in. I wanted to be sure a new backup ran. My experience with TIH is if I choose to run a backup manually then TIH won't do it (at least my experience when TIH is set to run backup when you tell Windows to shutdown). If you know this situation better than I then you may have the answer. Otherwise tonight will be the test. I don't understand why it wasn't at least running the backups at the scheduled time of 10pm anyway. Never had that happen before. I had to remote in and run them.

Check to make sure the "advanced settings" in the scheduler menu is NOT set to run the backup only when the computer is idle.
Also, browse to the timed-shutdown.cmd file you created and if you wanted to test it, just double click on the file and see if it shutsdown the computer.
An xp computer uses a -
An Win 7 computer uses a /
when creating the extra suffix such as
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE -A
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE /A

Backup failed last night:

Also:

- Looks like the backup finally ran at the scheduled time of 10pm finally
- However the PC did not shutdown after the backup
- You asked, "Check to make sure the "advanced settings" in the scheduler menu is NOT set to run the backup only when the computer is idle." I just checked and it is NOT set to run only at idle.
- I did not run your test command but I did setup the cmd file in Acronis and then ran a manual backup. It then shutdown afterward. So it looked to me that this worked yesterday at the non schedule time.

As indicated in the log file, it appears that TI had no issues with the cmd file but there is an error with the cmd file itself.
This could be a security issue, especially if the cmd file was not created on the same computer.
My suggestion is to browse the actual timed-shutdown.cmd file itself.
Right click on the file and select properties.
First check to see if the file needs to be unlocked
and then under the security tab, edit the securities for each name or process listed so that each one has full control to do all functions.
Edit & Update:
Ran a successful test on Win 7 system since I posted the above.
Created new cmd file as per link above.
Created new task.
Added the cmd file as a post command--same as yours appears
Executed the backups using backup Now.
Backup competed without errors and the Win 7 Laptop did a shutdown.
I checked my security on the file and needed no edits but I was the one who created the file and ran all the tests.
A scheduled backup also ran and shutdown the computer using the timed-shutdown.cmd post command.

I logged in early this a.m. to see if it backed up. I'm supposed to get an email whether successful or failure. I'm not getting emailed either. I see the backup DID run at 10pm however. When I logged in this a.m. there was a message up about the .cmd file you had me create and it wanted approval to run. There was a check box that was ticked so I unchecked it so it would allow it to run which I perceived it should do from now on. Not sure with all the issues I'm having.
This .cmd file was created on this machine. When I get back home I'll need to follow your instructions above.
Edit:
LOL. I mentioned I found that Win7 wanted authorization to run the .cmd file. Once I said yes the timer came up for 180 seconds to shutdown. I just received an email saying the backup was successful. So it has to complete this step before it emails. Not sure if I need to go back and edit the .cmd file or not since I unchecked that box. It shouldn't need authorization to run from this point and should be on autopilot.

I read your edit. Hopefully, the one check authorizing will suffice Based on your intention to use on other machines, I wrote the below.
This may help. I tested it and this also works for me on my Win 7 laptop.
When I wrote the instructions in post #5, the instructions were based on use as a single individual. You may be able to get around some of your security isses on client computers if the intructions in post #5 were modified to change how you access Notepad and avoid the use of a user account.
Revised:
Go to
Start/All Program/Accessories
Right Click on Notepad
Choose "Run an Administrator".
Now Notepad is open for pasting of content (example for Win 7 computer)
%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\SHUTDOWN.EXE /s /t 180 /c "Shutdown in 180 seconds" /d p:4:1
File: Save as
c:\timed-shutdown.cmd
-----------------------------------
In the Pre/post post command instructions under the edit command.
Browse to and select for use
c:\timed-shutdown.cmd
rather than
c:\users\.............\timed-shutdown.cmd
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Testing:
I would encourage your setting up your troubleshooting scheme as indicated prior.
Browse to "c:\timed-shutdown.cmd" and test if it works by dbl click on file to execute the shutdown command.
After shutdown command begins, Dbl click on the desktop shortcut (prior creation) to stop the testing shutdown.
Let me know if you decide to use any of the above.

Good, it looks that way but I will go ahead and revise the instructions so a to run Notepad as Administrator and save the file to c:\
If you use this for future clients, I would suggest you use the revised instructions.
Happy New Year.
