Old Timer Former Computer Support person needs explanation

Thread needs solution

My problems are:

A: Did I do a backup of my C:\ or not?
B. What is icon "non-stop backup started?
C. Could I put in new HDD and use what I have to create exact system configuration and software installed as was on the drive I am replacing?

What I did was:

A. Go to folder under programs "Acronis True Image Home 2011" and select "Acronis One-Click Backup". When it started it ask if I wanted my system backed up and also if I wanted my Favorites, etc etc. I left both checkmarked and set location for the file. The taskbar had two icons added which were both Acronis - one icon was showing % completion when the other icon which is still running on my taskbar called "non-stop backup started".

B. If I open up "Acronis True Image Home 2011" and select "go to main screen" I get a screen that shows the following"
My System 78.4 gig backup successfully created - I can choose "recover or backup buttons.
My Personal data successfully created - I can "explore and recover" button and non-stop arrow.
7152011 Pavillion not backed up yet - I can "backup now" button. That would have been a backup on July, 15, 2011 of my computer "Pavillion" Since I read it to mean "not backed up yet" so I needed to do another backup of the same computer. Then it failed. There is a log but suspect the running of "non-stop backup" may have caused its failure, or a setting for backup on 07152011 was wrong.

Finally I did a "validate backup" on the System 78.4 successful backup and it came back ok.

Oh Yea I created an ISO recovery file and burned it to a dvd.

Tried to read manual but a BART PE or Windows PE did not make sense I have not done that. Seemed like one for XP and I have Vista64.

Phew! Hope someone visualize this and explain what I have done. -This is a re-post because I was told that my post was in wrong forum.

OK. These one-click things are confusing.
What you need to replace a failing system disk is:
- a disk and partition backup that includes *all* the partitions of the disk where you system is.
- optionally, additional or more frequent backups for your content. For this you can use Non-Stop backup, or file backup. Unless you really need rapid backups, you can safely stick with file-backups: these backups are easier to manage and you can validate them. If you do frequent disk and partition backups, you may not need any file, non-stop or email backup.
- a recovery CD that you have tested: boot the computer on it, get familiar with the restore wizard (drive letters are not the same as in Windows), restore a couple of files.

BartPE or WinPE disks are not necessary when you standard recovery CD gets the job done. Their advantage is that they use Windows drivers instead of Linux drivers on the standard CD. Therefore they have broader hardware support.

I suggest to create your backup from the mainscreen. Delete the ones you have, create the one(s) describe above. Familiarize yourself with the options.

In particular:
- in the backup options, advanced tab, make sure you schedule the validation when you want, and uncheck the advanced settings option in the validation schedule,
- do not change key settings like the backup scheme, auto-cleaning options or name of the TIB file, or the location. Create a new backup task instead.
