Painfully slow, boot, hang, black screen after disk clone

Just got a 500GB Momentus XT 2.5 and copied my old laptop HDD data to it using Acronis bootable media. (I'm running Win 7 Pro 64bit)
HDD copied ok and it boots but it is so so slow.
I only takes about 6 seconds on Windows Logo load screen, then the Windows logon screen appears. Here I enter password or scan fingerprint....... then it gets slow. It takes about 30 seoncds saying 'welcome' with spinning cicle, then the screen goes black - you can only see the mouse arrow - it stays like this for about 60 seconds then finally you see the dektop.
If I swap the HDD to the old one it only takes about 8-10 seconds after windows logon (spiiing circle with 'welcome') and there is no black screen - straight into desktop after 8-10 seconds.
I cant think what is causing this. XT drive is upposed to be much quicker than old HDD. But this is not just slower, this is hanging for a long time.
I have tried disabling all startup items but this dosnt make any difference.
I have upgraded to very latest firmware on XT HDD.
I'm also getting touchpad error saying unable to connect to 'Synaptics Pointing Device Driver' and the toshiba flash cards dont work any more so I cant control wireless etc any more.

Is this an issue with new HDD hardware or with HDD data copy?
