PC Backup & Recovery - Does recovering data using a full backup file overwrite data already on the hard drive?

Thread needs solution

I ran a full backup on my husband's business laptop prior to sending it out for repair. My husband needed to access files from the backup, so I loaded the backup onto a spare laptop also running Windows 7. The problem is that he created new documents on that spare laptop prior to when I loaded the backup onto it. He can no longer access those newer documents. When I loaded the backup, I do not recall receiving any warning that the hard drive data would be overwritten, so I am hoping the data is not gone. How can I access it?

If you restored just certain files from a backup, then that would not overwrite anything else on the target disk (other than older files of the same name and location).

If you did a disk or partition restore, then that would by definition wipe out what was on the target disk or partition.

If you wanted just a few files, you should have done a file restore, or just opened the .tib archive in Windows Explorer and copied over the files you wanted.
