Permissions problems on new computer

Thread needs solution

I just tried to restore my Documents from my old computer (Windows XP) to my Documents on my second computer (Windows Vista).

Whenever I try opening a folder in my Documents in the new laptop, I get a permissions error. The only way I have found around this error is to open the folders in Windows Explorer, click Continue when "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" pops up, click Continue again when "Windows needs your permission to continue" pops up. That unlocks the folders for the purpose of opening in MS Word. It also causes the folder icon to change from that displayed on the right of the attached image to that displayed on the left of the attached image with the two people in the corner of the folder.

Is the only way to unlock all of these folders by manually going into each one in Windows Explorer as described above? Isn't there a way to get all of the files that I restore via Acronis to automatically copy with open permissions?

Right click on the top folder you have, choose properties, security. Click on advanced, owner, and make the administrators the owner, or your favorite user. For this. click on the owner tab, click on edit, select the owner, and don't forget to click the box to replace the owner on all subfolders.

Then, go back to the top folder, click on properties, verify that the administrators have full control, check your sharing setting is any.

Thanks Pat, that worked like a charm. I wish I had selected "Notify me when new comments are posted" so I would have gotten this earlier. Is there a way to select that by default for all future messages?

I have one other question. Before you gave me this good advice, I was getting permission to view each folder via Windows Explorer in the convoluted manner described above. After I gave myself permission to enter into each folder, the folders changed to display two people in the bottom left (see image attached to original message). The folders that I took control of display these two people. The others do not. How can I make all of the folders look uniform?

You can set the default in your account. Click the My Account link on the left and then click Edit.

If you have 2 people showing on the icon, it generally indicates the folder is shared. Right click on each folder, look at the share tab and verify.

I have followed this procedure to change permissions. It will not let me "Apply" the change. Permissions revert back to original settings.

Thomas,

If you are an administrator, you should be able to take ownership of any file.

I am having the same issue. Yes, as Admin I should be able to take ownership, but I cannot do this with the newly mounted image.
