Previous On-line backups show deleted

Thread needs solution

Currently backing up additional data from my external hard drive. When I view previous backed up folders they show deleted. Have I lost all those files? I did not delete any items prior to conducting additional backups.

Are the deleted folders still showing as showing as selected in 'What to Back Up'?

David,

Forgive me for asking a question not related to yours. I notice you said that you are backing up some data from an external drive. I didn't know that you could use the on-line backup for external drives. I'm considering getting either carbonite of acronis for on-line backups. The carbonite website implies that only the main internal drive is backed up.

I did an online backup from an external drive. Actually, it is a SATA drive, connected to an ESATA port on my pc, so actually looks like and has the speed of an internal drive. Took me a few days, running day & night as the backup is very slow. I got mostly between 1.5 Mbit/second to 3.0 Mbit/s. My online backup is encrypted, which I believe is one of the reasons why the backup was so slow.

Then, I did another online backup, without selecting the files in that external drive, as it was not connected. Now, I can't find the files in the online backup set. I think if you de-select files, online backup thinks you deleted them, so they get deleted on the online server.

It appears to me Acronis is not designed to "archive" files on their online backups. My experience has been, if you don't continually backup files (by specifying those folders in the "files to be backed up"), they disappear off the online server. I expect Carbonite to behave the same way as Acronis.

I haven't used Carbonite, but have read they will backup "all the hard drives INSIDE your computer". If you had multiple spindles inside your computer, you could back them all up. I interpret USB drives can't be backed up with Carbonite, as they use an external interface.
