Problem recovering older backups: wont boot vista from 07 backup
2011 home TI was used in attempting to recover an early vista backup (made in 2007) and also an early win 7 (2009 ?). In both cases the recovered disk would not boot. I tried to repair but windows was not listed in the repair os window. I managed to get the win 7 to finally boot up. I did this by installing win 7 using the original key. Once I verified it was bootable I then installed the 2007 backup which booted up just fine. Something is not correct in the 2011 recovery procedure that acronis implements.
I cannot do this easily for the vista backup as I cannot find the original serial and matching dvd. Possibly, the win7 install can be used.
I tried bcdedit /enum as suggested in another post here, but bcdedit stated a file was missing and there is no c:\recovery directory. I dont recall haveing problems like this in 2007 doing recoveries using acronis. Something is wrong with the boot sector and the windows 7 or vista cannot fix the boot. This has to be a problem with acronis. I am no expert but I recall restoring boot drives in the past and not having this problem. I made a backup of the entire disk, not just a partition, back in 07.
The vista 2007 backup was made after I did an OEM install on a new motherboard and disk. I used acronis TI but I dont remember the version other than it was upgraded to work with vista 64 bit oem.
I am looking for my original vista DVD and serial # but if there is another way to get this to work I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
