Questions regarding Backup/Restore

Thread needs solution

Good day,

I recently had some issues with the backup/restore using ATI 2014.

Computer Brand : Dell Inspiron 660 Desktop
Windows : Windows 7 Home Basic 64 bit (Original)
HDD Capacity : 1T (with around 380GB used)
External HDD Capacity for storing tib file : 500 GB

Since last Sunday, I noticed restore points on my computer disappearing, my computer is still bootable and works perfectly fine on every aspect, and only crashes once on the day before I run the test, it can bootup really fast, shuts down just fine without any sort of problems, with the only symptoms is the restore points vanishing, within 30 seconds of creation after a manual one was created. In the event viewer, I can see errors of "Shadow copies of Volume C: is aborted because of an IO failure." appearing everytime it occurs. Suspecting a HDD issue, I run a hardware pre-boot diagnostics test, my fears come true, the HDD is confirmed to be failing with an error code.

As I have alot of installed applications on my computer, I wished to create a full system backup image so I can use to do a complete restore when I get a replacement HDD. I wouldn't want to go through the tedious process of manually installing OS, drivers and reinstall my apps again. I have backed up all of my important data on my external HDD.

There are 3 partition on my HDD, a Recovery Drive, the C drive, and one MBR drive.

While creating a full backup image to store in my external HDD, I encountered an error
Failed to read from sector 'xx,xxx, xxx' of hard disk '1'. Failed to read the snapshot. (0x10C45A) CRC error. I dont remember the exact code of the sector. I suspect this may be caused by my failing HDD, so I just press ignore and the backup eventually completed without other errors.

I proceed to create a bootable rescue media. When I booted the rescue media, when Acronis loads, it immediately shows me an error that is similar to one above, unable to read sectors but there are more this time, around (5-6), except without the snapshot and CRC error. It happens BEFORE the main interface where I can get to choose backup/select drives etc. I am able to see the required drives showing in here, but I have not do any "test" restore at the moment.

Here is my question:
1. I have seen issues with ATI when restore can fail despite the backup seems successful. And since I'm backing up an image with possible bad sectors, am I able to restore it to the replacement HDD (blank)?
2. Anything I need to take note of if I were to do the restore?
3. Can I do a "Test" restore on my current HDD without risking the current HDD not bootable should it fail?
4. Will it have any issues on the new HDD after restoration due to the backup error?

Notes:
1. I do not want to run any chkdsk procedures, as my windows Explorer, Themes has undergone customization and running these processes will make my issues worse. I am positive my HDD is failing.
2. I do not wish to risk on cloning and I dont have support/tech skill and equipment to do that.

Appreciate a lot if anyone could enlighten me on any solutions and suggestions for this issue.

Thank you!

Unless you fix the errors on the disk you will not have any success. Do you have a recent backup prior to the HDD problems from which to do a restore? Short of that use chkdsk to repair disk then backup and restore in my opinion are is your only option.

Thanks for the suggestion, though it is not really clear on this.
I wouldnt have need to worry about creating a backup if I had a recent backup prior to HDD problem. Would appreciate it if anyone would explain the details of the error and the effect it might have on a restore and what I can do. I understand chkdsk is an important step for this, but is there a way around that and if yes, what are the possible consequences?

Remarks: I have a recovery CD for OS, but it is my last resort which I will use only if absolutely nothing else can help backup image and restore. I like to avoid that as my PC is still usable.

Please refer to this knowledge base article for your error. Any colored text can be expanded for further details. Post back your results.

In simple terms this error means that you may have bad sectors on your HDD. It may be about to fail. Running CHKDSK as suggested may correct the issue and allow you make a backup.

Seems to be getting nowhere with the error but I got my system image backed up.
I tried doing a "test" restore with a virtual machine using VMWare Player but I am facing an issue when I get to this part. I am unable to proceed further as no items are displayed when I click on new location, and the other two change default buttons cant be clicked. This occurs on all 3 partition (C, 1-1 and 1-2) shown on the left.

I selected full backup and chose all the items to recover. If I select only MBR, it also shows no items to display when selecting target disk for MBR recovery. I have hit a brick wall here, as it seems to be not detecting the virtual hard disk.

May you advice what may be wrong with this? I try searching for solutions for this but cant seem to find one.
For the mean time I will do a validation on my backup image, will update once complete.

Not sure if this will help but have a look.

If you are having troubles with a recovey, as long as your TI serial has been registered, you can contact TI support via Live Chat or emails and get help directly on recoveries.

When filling out the support ticket, be sure and specify it is a RECOVERY issue.

Thanks for all the advices!
The validation completed without any problems.
I managed to run the recover after using the Add New Disk function in the recovery media and then it finally detects the virtual disk.
The recovery operation also succeeded without any issues.
Last question here, If I try to boot using the recovered virtual machine in VM, I will get a BSOD.
I read this may be caused by hardware differences of the virtual disk and the config of the virtual machine.
Does that mean there is no way for me to boot it using VM as testing?
Or can the "Test Restore" part consider completed at this point?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Sorry for repeated post but did anyone have idea to suggest booting Windows from Virtual Machine while doing test restore?
Thanks.

I don't use virtual but maybe I can get someone who is.

Hello Everyone!

Grover, tomasjk, Bob (Robert) Huffman, thank you very much for helping!

Jiong 999, restoring a system backup to a virtual machine is the same as a migration to dissimilar hardware. To get the bootable system in your VM you need to use Acronis Universal Restore, which is available in Premium edition of Acronis True Image 2014.

Thank you.

Guess that answers my doubts. As the restore process was a success, technically it should be working if I restore it to a new hard drive as it is the same hardware. I can test it once my Hard Drive arrive 2 days later, and hopefully it works. Will update the results once complete.
Once again, thanks everyone for all the support and assistance provided!

Just an update. I replaced the new HDD and done the recovery and it works perfectly! The original issues with the disappearing restore points was also resolved as well, despite the backup is done after the hard disk fails. I guess as long as the critical parts of the sectors can work, a backup should still be possible.
Thanks to all who provided the help!
