Hi, I want to recover a corrupted file system from a TI image (TI 2011 home). There a 2 partitions, a small recovery one and the other is a Win 7 installation.

My plan is to restore to a new disk and then fix the file system.

According to the KB i should be able to do it using a sector by sector restore. I follow the directions in the KB and the last screen shows "sector by sector" for the first partition but NOT the second.
It recovers the MBR and the first partition but fails the second partition on the first read error.

Is there any actual way to achieve what i want with TI?
Also, what about the file restore option, can it be used to recover a Win7 install or will it skip system files?

I should add that the image backup was not sector by sector.

I'll try making a sector by sector backup, but is there any issue with regards to disk geometry?
The source and destination disk are completely different brands/capacities firmware, etc.

Also, while i'm on that, the MBR will be restored from the old drive and i assume i need to run fixMbr and fixboot on the new drive after restore, can anyone confirm?
Anything else - sector sizing?

For most cases you should be able to backup entire disk and then restore. If going to diff size disk, you'll have to change the size of one of the data partitions (e.g., the C: drive). Include the MBR in the restore. ATI should take care of the rest; should need to run fixMBR.

Note that if you had bad sectors, you're going to get bad sectors on the new disk. IF you had file corruption, the corruption will be there too. If the partition is fixable, you should be able to do it on the original disk before you restore. IN which case make a backup for safety and try to fix. Worst case, you restore and try again but the restore will be in the same condition as the disk was in when you made the backup. If it was unfixable then, ti is very likely going to be unfixable afterwards.

IF you had a backup that predates the wonk, then that you could restore with greater chances.

I ended up doing a "sector by sector" backup and restore and that worked. I had to specify sector by sector on the recovery option.
I'm not sure that i understand the difference of "sector by sector". I assumed it just meant it ignored the file structure (and errors).

Something weird with TI 2011's GUI too. Sometimes it offered "sector by sector" option in recovery and sometimes it didn't. It also showed "sector by sector" when i was attempting to recover the first non sector by sector backup. Somethings up with it.

Anyhow finally recovered to the new drive and was able to fix the file system.
