Recover MBR only - image has 2 partitions.

Thread needs solution

I had Windows 7 and Linux Mint 12 on 2 partitions. The PC booted to Linux to its loader and I got a dual boot menu then. Since reloading Windows I've of course reset the MBR and lost the boot into linux.

I'm thinking that just reloading the MBR from the old backup image should do the job. Problem is, I can look at a current new backup and toggle view of the partitions or MBR, but in the old backup I never get there. ATIH 2012 sits for hours trying to open the image file. I know its good, I've used it to restore files via windows explorer. But the ATIH program itself wont do anything. And the rescue media just flat out has no options like that.

Also a side note, I did a single partition image and got 2 of them, Windows 7 and Dell's Recovery partition. I want to say it added another random partition, as it didn't add the Dell Utility partition, or the Linux, or my Data partitions. Why this one. And how can I make it just simply backup one single partition when I click "single" on the backup. It adds 8 gig to the image file and I don't need it.

Was this a diskmode backup? If so, then you can use the bootcd to recover and and when you select the backup tib to restore you will be offered to select partitions and MBR.

If you do a partition mode backup you can select a single partition to backup--you will then only be able to restore that single partition form that backup.

Under normal conditions, when you boot into the Acronis TrueImage Home bootable media CD or Flash drive and choose the Recover option, after you browse and select the backup to be restored, the resulting display should include all the partitions i ncluded in the backup plus the
Track0/mbr option as an option which can be restored from the backup as a single item restore.

I've been able to find the restore MBR in the menu. I'm afraid to click restore not knowing what is beyond it, but I found some good help about ATIH and was secure knowing that beyond that was the option to pick the MBR only.

I also have switched the backup to multi partition mode and found the 2 partitions selected and just deselected the one I don't want.

I'm very used to ATIH 2010 and this 2012 version UI is horrible. I'm sorry to say, and I know it falls on deaf ears in this forum but I'm more likely to not advise friends to buy this software now that I've seen it. Sorry Acronis.

Alan,
I prefer to use the Bootable Media Recovery CD for any recovery of a partition or disk or mbr. I will only use the recovery from inside Windows to recover a few files--never a partition or disk. Within the CD, you can easily see what is happening and it is simulation or practice until you get to the last screen where you have a final option to Cancel or Proceed.

Whereas, within the Windows installed version, there is no option for simulation or correct of mistaken choices. Once you click the Recover now option the recovery begins.
