Recovery of file from Backup - didn't
I accidently ran a MCAfee Uninstaller which deleted my McAfee Internet security, etc. I tried to restore it
from the complete backup. The end result was blank or empty shortcuts on my desktop where real McAfee
shortcuts used to be. McAfee was not restored. I just happened to "luck out" and go back to McAfee site and dowload/reinstall everything as my subscription (advanced options) had not yet run out.
So how is it that Acronis does not restore file(s) and registry from a complete backup. It restored empty (useless) shortcuts to the desktop. I'm worried if there is a serious problem, I have backups but there is no way to get them installed (either as group or individual programs) and correctly recreated in the registry.
I've searched through many forums. There is "information overload" as I can't seem to find anything on it
and I can't figure out what is wrong. Anyone have any ideas how it is supposed to work? Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thanks!

I couldn't find McAfee specicifically in the .tib total backup so I ran a restore where it is supposed restore differences. So, after running it and about 20 minutes (approximately), I got the "shell" of the Mcafee shortcut restored back onto the desktop screen, but that was about it, so the restore was useless.
I can't figure out how it went through the whole backup but only went through the motions in the restore. I didn't see any registry references either. Either it didn't do it or I have no idea where to look. I didn't see it a subdirectory either.
So the end goal of all this is 1) start over- delete any references to .tib file, etc on my external HD
2) do a total backup w/ Acronis 2010 - somehow confirm it backed up everything
3) have a procedure in place to RESTORE a program OR the entire drive and all its parts and registry back to the PC
from the ext.-HD if the program gets deleted(like before) or HD gets corrupted. Hopefully Acronis could do this entire
HD backup, including the registry? BTW, I tried a total restore on my other desktop PC w/ Acronis 2009 after a virus
hit it. It never worked.
It was backed-up on another separate HD with a .tib file. I don't remember the message. I had to get Windows
reinstalled at a pc repair place and I lost all my programs.
The box never came with instructions, so I've tried to view demo's on YouTube, but it wasn't conforming to what I wanted to accomplish, which was to backup and have the ability to restore w/ confidence the program with all it's parts and locations (e.g. program files, common files, registry, etc)
in case of a problem.
Thanks for your help in this very perplexing problem.

Are you making disk/partition images or file backups?

a restore where it is supposed restore differences
Screnshots may help, as I for one don't userstans what kind of resotre is supposed to do it. And screnshots of the backup task that generated these backups.

It appears to have made a complete backup with folders (icon image looks like a book) designated "C", "D", "E" and "F".
In the "C" folder or "book image" icon, contains things like "program files", "users", "perf log", "program files(x86)". "D" contains things like "acer boot", "boot", "rytools", "EFI", misc .dat files and log files. "E" contains "anytime " folder and "arcade.dat". "F" is empty.
I thought it did a full backup because I selected that uption initially. However, I find folders. In the "Program Files" folder, there is also "Common Files", which contains the "McAfee" folder.
So maybe the backup didn't do a disk backup w/ registry, etc but only a file folder (subdirectory) backup?.
There is only one drive designator (C:\) on the HDD. I'm trying to backup (bit by bit) to restore as a whole or particular files, depending on the disaster scenario.

I can't it to copy and paste for a screen shot. I've tried ctrl-a, ctrl-c, ctrl-v (select all, copy, paste) ....nothing.

If you see hidden partitions, it was a partition backup. So what happens when you try to restore it?

Alan,
If you are using Windows 7/Vista there is the screensnip feature that will save your screen as a png file and it can then be uploaded here. If using XP then CRTL+ Prt Scrn will allow you to paste into Paint and then save as a jpg or png file.

(Using Windows 7)
Well, like I said it didn't restore anything but empty (useless shortcuts). So at this point I'm not sure what to do. I could find a useless game and install it, run a whole new backup, uninstall the game, then retry recover again.
I recall it did give numerous "access denied " messages, which I had to click "ok" on each one that appeared.
My concern is I don't want to be messing up the drive especiallyafter windows updates that are automatically applied. I'm worred that there will be
some fragment left out or left over or whatever that hose up windows and cause more problems. Also, do I want to "overwrite " the present with the the past files? What disastrous consequences that could bring, I could just imagine. What stays, what shouldn't be included, file names with no clue of what they are part of, and the the list of concerns continues. The problem is, I don't know enough of what it's doing and I'm not a pc expert.
After having national chain "experts" do a so-called "tune-up" on the mini-tower pc and messing it up so bad, they had to reinstall windows xp and I lost all my programs. I don't want that to happen with the new laptop due to my own ignorance.
I wish there was an plain step by step approach.

Alan,
Are you unable to use the snipping tool shortcut off the accessories menu to provide some screen shots?
Is it just the desktop shortcuts that don't work?
Do programs start if you actually click on the exe files?
Are you able to mount the tib image and naviagte the contents?
The 'access denied' message can be an indicator that something has changed the security identifier that Windows uses for each users desktop.
If we were more certain about what McAfee may have done to cause the first problem, it might also explain why you also have a problem with your image.
If the screensnip tool won't work and your context shortcuts (CRTL+V etc) don't work then this sounds as thought Windows registry is damaged in some way.
Has W7 auto downloaded the new Service Pack for W7 yet?
Re-owning your folders is quite easy to do, but, if you could show how your TIH files look it would be helpful as your description of folders looking like book images doesn't ring a bell.

Colin,
The files were not there after the "restore". There were no actual reference to McAfee. (i.e. no.exe,etc). McAfee uninstaller cleans out everything, so there is nothing residual. So, for now the only thing I can do is try to recreate the problem with some unimportant program or game.
Of course now that that I already restored McAfee from website, I won't be deleting it again.
I'll check on windows updates, find a program to install, run a complete backup. After that I'll try a delete and restore.
The Ctrl A, Ctrl C and V works with MS Word documents.
The uninstaller again even clears the registry of any remnants of McAfee.
I'll let you know what I find. Thanks.
Alan
