Registry Cleaner Suggestions
This may seem off topic but it's related to my problems installing TrueImage. See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3592
One of the suggestions that I got involved running a Registry Cleaner. I have several: WinXP Manager, works ok but does things I don't like. Glary, which I haven't used all that much.
Are there others? Any that stand out?

The Registry cleaning feature of CCleaner is not very thorough at all ... still better than nothing. You might want to try Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.

That sounds a good one Scott. I use two paid for ones - Desktop Maestro and Regcure. Maestro I use because it has a registry compacter which creates a new clean reorganised registry. Regcure digs deeper than maestro. Together they keep the registry in good order and very quick.
I agree with Dwn about CCleaner. It is the best for ridding out rubbish files though and I have it running at every startup.
Tip - Since I have used TI I always delete files associated with Windows Updates, they are not needed and simply bloat your system backups;
delete everything in the windows\$hf_mig$ folder, \ie?updates, and the SoftwareDistribution\Download folders.

You have to make a choice between safety and comprehensiveness. ccleaner takes away stuff that you can delete with impunity -- you don't really need to know anyting about the registry. Once you go beyond the stuff ccleaener removes, you are taking risks that you might be botching the registry unless you know what you are doing. ccleaner is the only one o f the many reg tools I've used that works that way. I haen't tired them all but of all that I've tried even changes that tool claims are safe to make can get you into trouble unless you know what the entries are for asnd know, independent of the tool, that you can safely change them.
If I just want to regularly clean out useless junk -- ccleaner works great. However, if I need to do a targeted search and destroy mission (to clean off a program or such) then something powerful like JV fits the bill. JV Power Tools will let you take away more or less depending on level of risk you want to take and you can incluede/excluded categories. There are lots of other registry tools on the market but those two pretty well cover the two ends of the spectrum.

Neither Desktop Maestro/Reg Mechanic or Regcure will 'botch' your registry ever btw. Other registry cleaners aren't so particular and may cause you very unnecassary pain - i know, i been there lol. I like Comodo products for instance but if you let their reg cleaner loose it can cause mayhem.
I disagree with Scott cos it is healthy to know a bit about the registry cos it is central to how Windows works. My dad knows and he is 78 years old. Is nowt to be scared of, is just a central database of information. Tech details of how it is used by software is not needed but an appreciation is ok.

I also heard about Regcure from filetonic.com...They've got a good review of this software.
