Remove removeable drive -> no database

Thread needs solution

Relative newbie with ATI. Running ATIHome2010 on XP/SP3. Drive 0 is 150GB partitioned as C: & D, drive 1 is single 750GB E: partition. I use an external drive on an eSata connection as a target for my ATI backups.

ATI file and image backups work flawlessly, writing to the external drive. Looking in ATI at the 'Recovery' screen, I see that the ATI database has a record of the backups.

However, when the external drive is dismounted, all the ATI database records appear to be lost. The 'Recovery' screen shows nothing, and inspecting %APPDATA%/Acronis/TrueImageHome/Database I can see that the database has shrunk from its former size to a minimal 236 bytes.

Further, remounting the external drive (or even a complete reboot) does not restore the database. The only way I've found is to use the 'Browse' feature and manually restore it, one item at a time. Of course the next time the external drive is dismounted, the data is gone again.

So, what am I missing here? Any enlightenment much appreciated...

Hello David,

No worries, I will assist you with this situation.

Let me provide you with some general information regarding this database:

Acronis True Image Home 2010 creates the archive database file upon the first startup. Information about every backup created with Acronis True Image Home 2010 is recorded into this database. The database file is named archives.xml and is located in:

  • Windows 2000/XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database
  • Windows Vista: Program Data\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

The database contains information about all the archives, slices and volumes created by the program. See Acronis True Image Backup Units: Archive, Slice, Volume.

Each archive group contains description of every slice. The most important parameters that describe a slice are:

  • DataCreationTime - Time of when the slice was created. The time is displayed as Unix epoch time
  • ID - Slice identification number
  • Name - Archive name
  • ParentID - ID of the previous slice in the chain. If the ID consists of zeros, then this is the first archive in the chain
  • Type - Slice type in numerical value. 0 - full, 1 - incremental, 2 - differential, 3 - edited (created after mounting the archive in read/write mode)
  • Volumes - Volume list for each slice. The Volume parameters are:
    • ID - Volume Identification number
    • Size - Volume size
    • Uri - Path and filename of the volume

But in your case, database creates the file with relation to external drive (with its unique ID, which Windows assigns each time you plug\unplug the drive from the system), that's why your backups aren't longer displayed in the database. We have already reported this situation to our Experts, so the fix will be considered. I'm sorry for the inconvenience you experienced.

The only workaround is to browse for your backups manually. Also, please check this article for the detailed information on how to move your backups with our product.

I'd like to make sure all your queries regarding Acronis products are resolved.
Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Regards,
