Renaming an archive
How can you rename the files in an archive in TI2011? Thanks

Will that also change the name displayed in the backups list to what you changed it to?

I am not sure, but either way, you can change this name at any time without having to change the name of the TIB files. Click on "operations", edit backup settings.

Thanks that's what I wanted to do, I don't care about the actual file name.

Some of my Backups don't have this option in "Operations"

Correct. If your backups are not active tasks, you don't have all menu options in operations.
BTW, you don't need to have all your backup *files* in the list for you to restore them. So you can remove (not delete) the archive from the list. If I were you I'd keep the list down to the active tasks.
If your backup is an active task and you don't see this option, there is a problem.

I don't know what an active task is as opposed to other tasks. thanks

I am referring to the list of backups. ATI displays individual archives and active tasks. An active task has a backup now button. An individual archive has only a recover button.

can an individual archive be made active or do you have to do the backup over ? IE; is that button only added at the time of the original backup/ Thanks

You can use recreate settings.
Again, if I were you though, I would start a new fresh backup task. ATI 2011 is not reliable when you edit major backup settings like name, location, backup scheme, auto cleaning options, etc. It is much better to start a new task. I understand that some users are reluctant to start a new full backup, but you have to keep things in perspective. It is much more important to have a reliable backup set.
In general, ATI 2011 is working much better when left alone auto-cleaning archives based on the keept X most recent versions, avoiding auto-consolidation. You can add manual backups in the middle of a chain, but the counting for the auto-cleaning rules will be temporarily thrown off, for example. Erratic behavior will happen if you change the backup destination or name. Some backup chains could become orphaned if you change the auto-cleaning options or backup scheme, etc...

I don't use any auto features. I create backups and then when I feel like it I increment them or do new fulls depending. I take it that if you add a backup to the list from a source that you can't increment it because it doesn't have the "Backup Now" button. If I'm wrong how would you increment the backup when it doesn't have the "Backup Button"? I've had a couple of incidents where I cancelled jobs and shutdown the system and TI wouldn't let it happen. Eventually I had to re-boot the next day and as a result the list got corrupted and I had to add the archives to the list and then lost the "Backup Button".

Norman,
2011 is different from 2010. You cannot add an incremental to an existing independant full backup. Backup tasks are created at the onset as full, incremental OR differential backups.
When you choose increment or differential, the first backup you create is always a full backup.
To do what you want, create a new backup as an incremental backup. Ask ATI to create a new full backup from time to time. Your last full backup should never be too old for you to go back to. Remember you may have to go back to your last full backup if, for any reason, your partial chain gets corrupted. I also recommend you have always a full validated backup.
Then click on backup now. Your first backup will be a full backup. If you click backup again, the next will be a partial backup.
