replacing an HDD in a existing laptop by an SDD

Thread needs solution

I have a laptop with two HDDs, the one I want to replace by the SDD contains a small boot partition and the system partition (on the SDD, I want to combien these two partitions again).

I have two ideas on how to proceed.

The first one:
1) backup both the boot and system partitions with Acronis True Image
2) replace HDD by SDD (assuming SDD is formated by the factory as one NTFS partition)
3) restore to that SDD partition both the boot and system partitions using the bootable TI CD

The second one:
1) backup the system partition only with TI
2) replace HDD by SDD
3) install a fresh W7 on the SDD (no assumption on SDD formatting required, W7 should take care of that)
4) restore the system partition using the bootable TI CD (overwriting the newly installed W7)

Has anybody done this before? What would you recommend I do? Thanks for your help.
